A method using a spatial-temporal software game for both teaching math concepts to a child and for scoring the child's proficiency in these math concepts. These scores are compared with the child's performance on a language-based test of the math concepts. If the child's score on the language-based test is lower than what is reflected by the child's game scores, instruction is given the child using stories and flashcards related to the spatial-temporal software games so that the child will relate vocabulary terms with the math concepts and characters in the temporal-spatial software game.

For example, a device for teaching mathematics includes a base having a plurality of channels for accepting vertical rods of varying lengths; a lever movably attached to the base at a pivot, the lever passing through the plurality of channels; and a plurality of vertical rods, each of the plurality of vertical rods located at least partially in one of the plurality of channels and resting on the lever; wherein the plurality of vertical rods are sized and arranged so that the tops of the vertical rods illustrate a parabolic function; and wherein moving the lever about the pivot moves the plurality of rods within the plurality of channels and illustrates changes to the parabolic function represented by the vertical rods.

A method and system of training in conjunction with a computer animation executed by a computing environment is described. The method includes recognizing a task to be performed in the computer animation, recognizing a problem, displayed in the computer animation, to accomplish the task, and solving the problem by manipulation of a virtual apparatus having virtual components displayed in the computer animation. The virtual components are manipulated by a student or user desiring to learn. The student is taught to understand logically consistent goals by using the virtual apparatus and without language interaction. Rules and properties for a subject area are modeled to the student by the virtual apparatus without language interaction. The student is taught to operate the virtual apparatus without language interaction. The student is requested to operate the virtual apparatus to reach goals in a sequence of problems having progressive difficulty and without language interaction.
