摘要： A self-sealing needle injection hub has two resilient, elastomeric sealing members mounted adjacent one another in a housing, both having pierced passages through which a needle can be inserted. The outer member is thick and relatively rigid; the inner member is thinner and flexible. Both members are radially compressed by the housing, the inner member bowing away from the outer member at its center. The action of withdrawing a needle from the hub, combined with the pressure of blood on the inner member, maintains the inner member flat against the outer member, thereby further compressing the passage through the inner member.

摘要： An endometrial sampler has an outer catheter and an inner plunger slidable within the catheter. The catheter has a coaxial opening at its tip and two side openings located diametrically opposite one another close to the tip, the side openings being elongate along the axis of the catheter. The tip of the plunger projects into the tip opening to form a smooth surface to the sampler. An O-ring seal on the plunger is located rearwardly of the side openings so that suction is applied to both the side openings and the tip opening when the plunger is pulled rearwardly.

摘要： A laryngeal mask airway has a foam cuff formed on the patient surface of a plate attached at the patient end of a tube. The cuff is of a self-skinning foam so that the skin of the foam forms the outer surface of the cuff and seals with the plate. An air lumen extruded along the tube opens at one end into the interior of the cuff and at the other end connects with an air line. The cuff can be compressed for insertion and removal by applying suction to the air line.

摘要： A spinal-epidural needle assembly has a rearwardly-extending sleeve on the epidural needle that is rotatable to a limited extent on its hub and that has a series of circumferentially-extending ribs on its outer surface. The spinal needle has a collar extending forwardly from its hub and slidable along outside of the sleeve of the epidural needle. The collar has a small elastomeric pad on its inner surface, which is slidable along a smooth region to one side of the ribbed region. The spinal needle is locked longitudinally relative to the epidural needle by twisting its collar so that the elastomeric pad slides laterally over the ribbed region with the ribs gripping into the pad.

The cuff encloses an axial sleeve that is slidably mounted within the patient end of the tube and is urged forwardly by a resilient collar. The sleeve can be retracted by applying vacuum to the cuff and, when released, extends forwards to prevent the cuff occluding the patient end of the tube.

摘要： An electrical system has a solid state switch controlled by a circuit emulating the thermal sensor of an electrothermal circuit breaker. A current sensor senses current flowing through the switch. In one arrangement, the current sensor supplies an output to a multiplier, which derives a voltage representative of a current squared, this being supplied to a resistor capacitor circuit having a time constant emulating the thermal sensor. In another arrangement, the output of the current sensor is supplied via an A/D converter to a processor that calculates the difference between heat gain and heat loss of the emulated thermal sensor. The switch is opened when the emulated temperature exceeds a threshold.
