Novel membranes comprise crystals of a zeo-type material carried by a porous support. The crystal growth of the zeo-type material is essentially continuous over the pores of the support and the zeo-type material is crystallized directly from and bonds directly to the support. Membranes may be prepared by immersing the support in a synthesis gel, crystallizing the gel, removing the support, and repeating these steps at least once.

In a process for removing iodide compounds from a liquid composition comprising carboxylic acids having 2 to 6 carbon atoms or anhydrides thereof, by passing the liquid composition through a silver, mercury, palladium and/or rhodium-exchanged strong acid cation exchange resin, prior to contacting with the metal-exchanged resin the composition is contacted with a cation exchanger in the acid form to remove at least a portion of the metal ion contaminants in the liquid composition which have been found to displace the silver, mercury, palladium and/or rhodium from the metal-exchanged resin.

The complexes may be prepared by reacting the compounds Pd(R'CO.sub.2).sub.2 and (R.sup.2).sub.2 PYP(R.sup.2).sub.2 together in an aromatic solvent at a temperature of less than 60.degree. C. in amounts such that the molar ratio of the two compounds is in the range 1.2:1 to 1:1.2.

Chiral imidazolidones and imidazolidinethiones having the general formula: ##STR1## where (a) Z is either oxygen or sulphur(b) the R groups are independently selected from hydrogen or R.sup.2 CO where R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl, C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 alkenyl or benzyl and(c) the two R.sup.1 groups are either (1) identical groups selected from C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl, phenyl or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl or alkoxy substituted phenyl or (2) such that together they form an alkylene group of formula --(CH.sub.2).sub.n -- where n=3 to 8.Most preferred are those compounds where both R groups are R.sup.2 CO and there is a C.sub.2 axis of symmetry running along the CZ double bond. Compounds of formula (I) where at least one R group is R.sup.2 CO are efficient chiral auxiliaries for a range of asymmetric electrophilic substitution reactions when used in homochiral form. As such they are important tools for synthesising a range of chiral pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and the like.

The analyser determines the amount of hydrocarbon material present in the rock. It is portable and is useful for field screening tests to reduce the number of samples sent for laboratory analysis.

A method for recovering the surfactant from a dispersion or emulsion of oil and water containing a temperature sensitive surfactant which method comprises the steps of heating the dispersion or emulsion to a temperature above the cloud point of the surfactant under conditions of temperature and aqueous phase salinity such that the dispersion or emulsion breaks and separates into an oil layer, an aqueous layer and a surfactant layer, and recovering the surfactant layer.The recovered surfactant may be recycled for use in preparing further quantities of dispersion or emulsion, thus rendering the operation more economic.

A composition for use after reductive activation as a catalyst in the conversion of synthesis gas to hydrocarbons, the composition having formula: Ru.sub.z A.sub.b CeO.sub.x, wherein A is an alkali metal, x is a number such that the valence requirements of the other elements for oxygen is satisfied, a is greater than zero and less than 5% w/w, based on the total weight of the composition, b is in the range from zero to 10% w/w, based on the total weight of the composition, and Ce and O constitute the remainder of the composition, is produced by the steps of: (A) adding a solution or solutions of soluble compounds of the metals ruthenium and cerium, and optionally also an alkali metal compound, to a solution of a precipitant comprising a carbonate and/or a bicarbonate and/or a hydroxide of an alkali metal or ammonium under conditions whereby there is formed a precipitate comprising ruthenium and cerium, and optionally also an alkali metal, in the form of compounds thermally decomposable to the metals and/or their oxides, and (B) recovering the precipitate obtained in step (A).

A crystalline material having, in the dehydrated form the empirical formula:m(M.sub.2/a O): X.sub.z O.sub.xz/2 : yYO.sub.2 (I)in which m is 0.5 to 1.5; M is a cation of valency a; X is a metal of valency x, selected from aluminium, boron, gallium zinc, iron and titanium; z is 2 when x is an odd number, an z is 1 when x is an even number; y is at least 5; and Y is silicon or germanium; and having, in the calcined hydrogen form, an X-ray diffraction pattern including significant peaks substantially as shown in table I herein. The material has been designated SUZ-4.
