    摘要: The present invention concerns medicaments for slowing ageing. The medicaments can include an inhibitor of microbial folate biosynthesis as well as agents capable of reducing folate uptake by an animal. Examples of such medicaments include inhibitors that reduce the activity of an enzyme in the folate biosynthesis pathway, such as sulfonamides including sulfamethoxazole. The invention also concerns a food supplement, additive, functional food, or nutraceutial comprising the inhibitor or agent or composition as discussed above, as well as methods for screening for an agent for use as a medicament for slowing ageing comprising determining whether a test agent inhibits microbial folate biosynthesis, or whether the test agent reduces folate uptake by a non-human animal.

    摘要: The invention provides compositions for an administration to a mammal orally or in a suppository that include one or more edible oils (preferably including one or more omega-3 fatty acids), one or more plant stanols, phytosterols, or esters thereof, and admixed in the one or more edible oils one or more water-soluble vitamins and/or minerals, for example, vitamins B6, B9 and/or B12. The invention also provides a method of making the compositions comprising mixing the foregoing components to form a suspension or emulsion of the vitamins and/or minerals in the edible oils. The mixture can be inserted into hollow soft or hard capsules, gelcaps or caplets. The edible oils can coat particles of the water-soluble vitamins and/or minerals, which may provide them with an improved absorption in the body due to an increased resistance to degradation in the acidic environment of the stomach.

    摘要: Methods are described for producing reduced, methylated, biologically active forms of folate, including 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (i.e. 5-methyltetrahydropteroylglutamic acid), 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, 10-formyltetrahydrofolate and tetrahydrofolate. Edible mushroom-producing fungi are cultivated to enhance the uptake of pteroylmonoglutamate (synthetic folate) into edible portions of the plants. The mushroom-producing fungi reduce and methylate the pteroylmonoglutamates into activated folates. The cultivated mycelia or mushrooms of the mushroom-producing fungi are harvested, and may be consumed directly or processed into oral dosage formats (capsules, tablets, softgels, powders, gel packets, liquids, nutritional bars, beverages) for use as functional foods or nutritional supplements.
