摘要: A threaded fusion cage for implantation between a pair of vertebrae. The cage has a discontinuous thread helically wound thereabout. The thread has a constant depth in posterior and middle portions of the cage but is feathered in an anterior portion of the cage so that the minor radius approaches or equals the major radius of the thread. This provides greater support to the relatively stronger and harder bone found at the anterior end of the vertebrae.

摘要: A surgical method and apparatus for implanting a spinal fusion implant includes a rigid centering guide having a distal end sized to be inserted into the disc space with the guide extending along a longitudinal axis from a distal end to a proximal end. The guide includes a first external guide surface which extends at least partially between the distal end and the proximal end. The external guide surface is shaped complimentary to an external guided surface of a drill guide. The external guide surface and the guided surface are nested such that the guided surface slides against the external guide surface along a path of travel parallel to the longitudinal axis.

摘要: A shell sleeve serves for the reception of a bearing socket. The shell sleeve possesses the shape of a body of revolution or rotation which tapers or narrows towards a pole region. This body of revolution carries at its outer surface a self-tapping thread. To facilitate threading-in of the shell sleeve into the bone substance or material and to preclude, during such threading-in operation, the application of forces which would cause any pressure and splintering action upon the bone substance or material, the thread comprises a flat thread. This flat thread has flanks dispositioned at essentially right angles to the lengthwise axis of the body of revolution and the spacing from thread flight to thread flight is constant. The portions of the thread flights which follow a related cutter or cutting surface thereof are undercut or machined back.

摘要: A lordotic implant has a frusto-conical shape with external threads. Prior to placement of the implant, vertebrae are distracted in a manner to provide a desired lordosis between the vertebrae. The pre-distracted vertebrae are then tapped to provide a tapped bore having a geometry matching the conical geometry of the implant. The threaded implant is then placed within the pre-tapped conical bore.

摘要: A resorbable interbody fusion device for use in spinal fixation is disclosed. The device is composed of 25-100% bioresorbable or resorbable material. The interbody fusion device of the invention can be in any convenient form, such as a wedge, screw or cage. Preferably, the resorbable device of the invention is in the shape of a tapered wedge or cone, which further desirably incorporates structural features such as serrations or threads better to anchor the device in the adjoining vertebrae. The preferred device further comprises a plurality of peripheral voids and more desirably a central void space therein, which may desirably be filled with a grafting material for facilitating bony development and/or spinal fusion, such as an autologous grafting material. As the preferred material from which the resorbable interbody fusion device is manufactured is most likely to be a polymer that can produce acidic products upon hydrolytic degradation, the device preferably further includes a neutralization compound, or buffer, in sufficiently high concentration to decrease the rate of pH change as the device degrades, in order to prevent sterile abscess formation caused by the accumulation of unbuffered acidic products in the area of the implant.
