摘要: A therapeutic collar comprising an elongate body made from a flexible material for extending around at least a portion of the neck of a patient. The body has a length approximating the circumference of the neck, two thermoelectric devices for overlying two carotid arteries in the neck and two thermoelectric devices for overlying of two vertebral arteries in the neck when the elongate body is secured around the neck of the patient. At least one cooling tube is carried by the elongate body and extends in the vicinity of each of the thermoelectric devices for removing heat from the thermoelectric devices.

摘要: A patient treatment system for treating a patient includes a cervical collar having a first opening located over a trachea of the patient and a second opening located over a carotid artery of the patient. An aid is disposed in the second opening and includes a base having a curved surface; the base is disposed proximal to a neck of the patient over the carotid artery. The aid also includes a first reacting agent and a second reacting agent. The first reacting agent and the second reacting agent create a thermic reaction when mixed. The aid further includes a first container and a second container. The base is part of the first container including the base; the second container is disposed entirely within in the first container.

摘要: The present invention is directed to a scarf having a sealable pocket. Within the pocket is a Joule-Thompson gas chamber having an activation device. When the activation device is triggered, the compressed gas is released from the Joule-Thompson gas chamber through at least one restriction aperture into the sealable pocket. That release results in at least the walls of the sealed pocket being cooled. Prior to being cooled or after being cooled, the scarf is placed over a portion of the patient's body. Preferably, the scarf is positioned over at least one of the patient's carotid arteries, preferably both, to effectively cool the patient's brain and/or body core temperature.

摘要: A device and system designed for use in a pre-hospital setting to cool the brain after injury is described. The device incorporates a cold insert into an arch that fits around the neck of a subject, without obstructing the airway of the subject. A cold insert, such as a frozen fluid or endothermic packet, is disposed within one or both of the terminal ends of the arch, adjacent to one or both of the subject's carotid arteries. The cooling effect is specifically directed to cool the blood flowing through the carotid artery to the brain. A system incorporating the device with a temperature monitor is also disclosed. The system allows a health care professional to monitor and regulate cooling as required in the pre-hospital setting.

摘要: Rather than cooling the brain by the relatively slow heat conduction through the low heat conductivity of the bony skull and hair covering the head, the present invention teaches the use of a light weight, easily applied neck encircling collar in firm contact with the soft tissue of the neck, and particularly in good thermal contact with the carotid arteries traversing the neck. A coolant flowing through channels embedded in the collar rapidly cools the blood flowing through the carotid arteries which branch into blood vessels throughout the brain providing vascular access and attendant rapid internal cooling throughout the brain including its deepest recesses. Placing the collar on the patient's neck is easily and quickly accomplished simultaneously with other emergency medical techniques, such as CPR, which maintain the patient's heart and lung activity. The collar of the invention contains no metallic parts; the collar, including the coolant channel, may be non-metallized fabric or plastic. This allows X-ray, Cat scan, or MRI procedures to be used while the collar is in place without impairing the effectiveness of the procedure. In a second embodiment, a conventional endotracheal tube, inserted into the trachea is provided with an toroidal bladder surrounding the tube. The toroidal bladder is positioned at the back of the oral cavity, and a coolant flowing through the toroid cools blood vessels in the oral cavity which traverse the brain, providing cooling of the brain tissue.

摘要: An orthopaedic gel pad assembly includes a layer of gel, with a backing layer behind it, an apertured pad extending around the layer of gel and a thin plastic film extending over the front surface of the gel. The plastic film controls the configuration of the front face of the gel, and the gel may be recessed, or indented, and may protrude forwardly out from the apertured pad. Stiff orthopaedic supports may be provided to back up the gel pad unit.
