A prosthetic device for replacing a facet joint in the spine of a patient is provided. The prosthetic device includes an anchoring member and a plate member rotatably and pivotably connected to each other by a ball and socket mechanism. The anchoring member is preferably in the form of a bone screw for placement into the pedicle/facet intersection of a vertebrae, and the plate member is provided with securing holes for securing the plate member to an adjacent vertebrae. A minimally invasive, percutaneous surgical method is also provided for replacing the facet joint in the spine, and a kit for performing the surgical method is also provided.

An improved polymer orthopedic implant and a method for making the same, where a portion of the implant for engagement with a patient's bone has a rough texture for encouraging micro-ingrowth between the bone and the implant. Substantially all remaining non-bone engaging portions of the implant are smooth for discouraging tissue ingrowth with the implant. The non-bone engaging portions of the implant are polished smooth, and are preferably transparent or translucent. The implant may be comprised of a slow reacting polymethylmethacrylate acrylic.

An artificial lumbar disc made of three components which are inserted individually. Two bean shaped implants are a mirror image of each other and are designed to be inserted on each side of the disc cavity. The third component is designed to fill the disc cavity remaining after the first two components have been inserted. The unique design focuses on restoring the natural function of the disc, reestablishing a preferred disc space, and providing ease of insertion through both a posterior and anterior approach. Moreover, the potential of prosthesis failure is fully addressed and feasible solutions to such an occurrence are proposed.

The present invention teaches a method and apparatus for providing and preserving kinematically correct spinal movement as well as enhanced bone fusion. The design of implanted and other devices fabricated from at least one of metal, ceramic, plastic, shape memory alloy, and other material is taught for facilitating approximately physiologic kinematics for intervertebral body movement as well as for enhanced fusion of vertebral bodies and components therein. Surgical tools and techniques for implantation of these devices made from a variety of materials are also taught.

An artificial articulation includes a socket which has a spherical inner surface, a bone head ball member which is pivotably, slidably received in the spherical inner surface of the socket, and a stem which is connected to the ball head bone member. The socket is made of polycrystal alumina porcelain, the bone head ball member is made of dense silicon nitride porcelain, and the stem is made of either silicon nitride porcelain or partially stabilized zirconia porcelain. An outer surface of the stem and outer surface of the socket are coated with first and second cover layer.
