In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, an apparatus includes an actuator with a spray nozzle and an opening adjacent the spray nozzle. The actuator dispenses spray through an orifice in the spray nozzle when the actuator is depressed to operate a pump or an aerosol valve. A wall including the spray opening at least partially surrounds the actuator and the spray nozzle is aligned with the spray opening during dispensing whereby spray exiting the spray nozzle orifice passes through the spray opening. Also included is a nozzle closure, with a first projection and a second projection. The first projection, forming a sealing rim with an inner recess, fits into the opening adjacent the spray nozzle thereby sealing the spray nozzle. The nozzle closure has a hinge allowing pivotal movement of the nozzle closure from a closed position, at which the first projection fits into the opening in the wall adjacent the spray nozzle and the nozzle closure closes the spray opening, to an open position, where the spray opening is open to permit the spray to pass through the spray opening when the actuator is depressed. The second projection fits within the inner recess of the first projection, and, when the nozzle closure is in a closed position, the second projection sealingly engages the orifice of the spray nozzle and displaces any spray deposits that may have accumulated therein. In another embodiment, a third projection may also be provided on the nozzle closure. The third projection may be located on the closure between the hinge and the first projection and may fit in a recess in the actuator, engaging the recess when the nozzle closure is in a closed position and preventing actuation of the actuator when the nozzle closure is closed.

The package includes a retaining opening into which a modular pump is snap-fit by inserting the modular pump through an open end of the package. The package also includes a upstanding wall portion, which provides a dispensing actuator locking and sealing mechanism, as well as a tamper-evident tab. The package and pump are assembled at a production site, and are thereafter shipped to a filling site with a bottom portion. The package is filled through the open bottom end, and then the bottom portion is sealingly affixed to the package. The package may include an integrally-molded dip tube structure and a bottom portion with specific structure for allowing easy assembly while preventing leakage. Accordingly, the device of the present invention can be filled and finally assembled with a minimal number of steps, and is therefore particularly suited for quick-turnaround marketing.

A thumb actuated flexible tube and closure system comprising a flexible plastic tube having a finish for dispensing a product when the tube is in an inverted position. The finish has an integral transverse wall, an integral post extending upwardly from the transverse wall and an integral cylindrical wall extending upwardly from said transverse wall. The transverse wall has at least one opening therethrough. An inner closure is provided and has a base wall and integral spaced inner and outer walls defining an annular space for receiving the finish of the plastic tube. At least one of the walls has threads thereon for rotatably engaging the finish. The base wall of the inner closure has a portion sealingly engaging the post on the finish such that rotation of the inner closure moves said sealing portion into and out of engagement with said post. An overcap closure is provided and has a base wall with an opening aligned with the sealing portion of said closure. The overcap and finish have interengaging elements to hold the overcap against rotational movement. The overcap includes a peripheral wall having an opening therein. A finger engaging portion on the inner closure extends through the opening in the overcap closure adapted to be engaged by a thumb of the user as the plastic tube is held in inverted position to rotate the inner closure and move the inner closure into and out of sealing position with the post on the finish.

A small hand-held dispenser of the pump variety, comprising a container and a cooperable dispenser pump construction adapted to be carried by the container. The pump per se is secured therein by means of a unique plastic closure which is in the form of an inverted, dish-shaped member. The closure has relatively thin walls enabling it to be readily molded, and has a depending peripheral flange with an internal bead which is forced over an external shoulder on the rim of the container so as to effect a snap fit therewith. In one embodiment, the flange has a depending portion which extends downward a substantial distance beyond the location of the internal bead, so as to minimize the likelihood of the flange being cracked either during or after the forced bypass of the bead and container shoulder. The plastic closure not only securely mounts the pump assemblage, but also effects a leak-proof connection with the container while at the same time simplifying the assembly operations and tooling.
