The enveloping diameter of the collecting pin in the loading position is variable with respect to its diameter in its discharging position for a wire coil wound up thereon. The invention relates to a process for removing the residual part of coils from a sheet or strip rolling mill in which the coils to be rolled are transported from the coil store to the uncoiling reel in a two-stroke process by means of a transportation facility e.g. coil transportation vehicle, horizontally and in a shuttle-like manner in the mill pit, the first stroke i.e. stage I being the movement of the coil transporter from the coil store to the uncoiling reel, and stage II being the movement of the coil transporter from the uncoiling reel back to the coil store. During a first stage of the process a new coil (7) is taken from the coil store (8) by the coil transporter (4) and driven to the region near the uncoiling reel (2), at the same time the residual part of the rolled coil (3) is removed from the uncoiling reel (2) by means of a trough (6) working in conjunction with the coil transporter (4) and the new coil to be rolled installed by advancing the coil transporter (4) into the region of the uncoiling reel (2) and mounted on this in preparation for threading into the rolls, while in a second process stroke, stage II, the coil transporter (4) and also the trough (6) for receiving a new coil (7) and delivering the residual part of the rolled coil (3) move back to their starting position.

A reel system, especially for rolling up strip steel, in which a rotatable housing is provided which has two circumferentially spaced spindles extending therefrom parallel to the axis of the housing, a gear in the housing is provided for each spindle and each spindle can be clutched to the housing or to the respective gear. A motor on the outside of the housing drives a gear meshing with the first mentioned gears while a ring gear on the housing meshes with a motor driven pinion for rotation of the housing. The housing carries clamp arms actuatable for clamping a wound up reel on each spindle. The arrangement permits each spindle to be positioned selectively in reeling up position for winding up a reel while the other spindle is positioned for discharging a reel previously wound up thereon.

An apparatus for and a method of handling a product length which has been formed into a continuous series of rings, and which because of previous manufacturing operations, the rings making up the relatively short front and tail end sections of the product length are unacceptable, while the rings making up the major intermediate section of the product length are acceptable. The unacceptable rings are separated from the acceptable rings at a location overlying a coil forming chamber. A plurality of collecting devices are indexed through the coil forming chamber to collect the acceptable and unacceptable rings into separate coils.
