There is disclosed a manufacture of a continuous hinge. The process is as follows. A metal strip is fed intermittently by a predetermined length towards a press-machining station where the strip is simultaneously cut and bent to form a hole, flap, swaged flap and loop during the stoppage of the strip. The strip having loops is cut into predetermined length to form leaves for a hinge. A pair of leaves are assembled by inserting a pintle through the aligned loops, and the assembly is reformed by roll means.

The instant invention is a method and apparatus for assembling two hinge leaves. The apparatus includes an assembly for feeding a predetermined length of a wire pintle into a shear assembly. The shear assembly cuts the wire pintle to a specified length and locates the wire in a channel. Substantially simultaneously with the shearing of the wire, a punch and die assembly adjacent the shear assembly locates the two leaves of the hinge such that the barrels of the hinge are aligned. Once in position, a linear actuator drives the sheared length of wire pintle into the aligned hinge barrels to couple the two hinge leaves together. Once the pintle has been inserted, staking pins within the punch and die assembly impact select ones of the hinge barrels to keep the pintle in place. Also, disclosed is a novel method of manufacturing the two hinge leaves.

The tubular barrels of a rising hinge having a loose pin are shaped in a tubular die in which an obliquely inclined annular face of an internal shoulder divides the die bore into two portions of different uniform cross section, by inserting a metal blank into the wider bore portion and partly extruding the metal through the orifice in the annular face into the second, narrower bore portion. The wider portion of the intermediate metal body so obtained which duplicates the shape of the annular face, is drilled out to a cross section greater than that of the narrower bore portion so that the narrower metal portion is severed from the now-tubular wider portion of the metallic body.
