    摘要: Systems and methods for fabricating metallic nuclear fuels are described. Methods may include preparing a metal feedstock charge; injection casting the metal feedstock charge into one or more molds to form one or more injection cast fuel slugs; determining one or more properties of the one or more injection cast fuel slugs; inserting one or more injection cast fuel slugs with acceptable properties into one or more jackets to form a plurality of fuel pins; and assembling a plurality of fuel pins into a multi-pin fuel assembly. The method may produce at least one multi-pin fuel assembly per day, wherein each of the at least one multi-pin fuel assemblies includes at least one hundred fuel pins.

    摘要: Elongated members of reactive metals and alloys thereof, for example, uranium and alloys thereof, are cast from a crucible containing the molten metal blanketed with an inert gas and non-reactive prepared molten slag, directly into a mould protruding from the crucible. The cast metal is spray cooled with inert gas, which may be liquefied, as it emerges from an outlet end of the mould and is pulled, for example by rollers, into and possibly through an inert gas flushed container directly connected to the mould outlet end.

    摘要: Systems and corresponding methods are described herein that provide an effective inert blanket over a metal surface (hot solid (charge) metal or molten metal) in a container such as an induction furnace. The system includes a container of metal and a system configured to delivery biphasic inert cryogen toward the metal. The delivery system may include a lance disposed at the top of the container. The lance has a hood that directs both a flow of liquid cryogen and a flow of vaporous gas toward the metal surface. The liquid cryogen contacts the metal surface, generating a volume of expanding gas over the metal surface. The vaporous cryogen creates a reinforcing vapor that slows the expansion rate of the expanding gas, localizing the expanding gas over the metal surface.
