Abstract:
A method and apparatus for permanently joining two or more metallic vehicle frame components using magnetic impulse welding techniques is disclosed. In a first embodiment, an overlap joint is formed by the joinder of two individual open channel side rail sections to form a portion of a vehicle frame side rail. The first side rail section is initially formed slightly smaller in size than the second side rail section so that it may be disposed telescopically therein with clearance. An electromagnetic coil is provided for generating a magnetic field which causes the side rail sections to move toward one another at a high velocity. The high velocity impact and the large pressures cause the two side rail sections to weld or molecularly bond. Alternatively, a bracket can be joined to a side rail section in a similar manner. In a second embodiment, a pair of closed channel structural members are formed using hydroforming techniques. The end portions of two hydroformed structural members are then disposed concentrically within an electromagnetic coil. When energized, the electromagnetic coil causes the end portions to move toward one another so as to weld or molecularly bond.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a control grid used in a fluorescent display tube is disclosed. The grid is produced by preparing a fine wire net, placing the wire net upon a metal frame member, and irradiating laser beams to the contact portions of the wire net and frame to weld the wire net and the frame.
Abstract:
A tool used in the construction of frames includes multiple clamps that are used to secure frame members at precise angles and orientations for welding. The tool includes a vertical support post upon which is mounted a table. First and second clamps are pivotably mounted to the table and allow two frame members to be secured in contact with one another and parallel to the table at a precise angle. A column extends upwardly from the table. At the upper end of this column is a support arm which is held parallel to the table by the column. A third clamp is mounted on the distal end of this support arm. This third clamp can be used to position a vertical or diagonal member in contact with the frame members held by the first and second clamps for welding. Additionally, the tool includes first and second attachments which can be used to secure vertical or diagonal members to the frame.
Abstract:
A platform for indexing and clamping metal studs and like building structural members together for manufacturing metal framed walls or trusses of buildings. The platform includes spaced members for supporting studs, plates and the like placed there upon, and is sufficiently open between the spaced and properly placed members to allow applying screws to both sides of the structural members for connection of joints. The platform may be manually loaded with the appropriate framing structural members with the platform in a horizontal position with the indexing stops upward. The indexing stops are used to position studs, and powered clamps are provided to secure the studs in place against the stops. Screws may be applied to a first side of the framing, followed by the platform being rotated 180 degrees under motor or like power to expose the second side of the framing to allow the application of holding screws thereto. The indexing clamps and the movable raised plate hold the framing in place while the platform is rotated or inverted.
Abstract:
A process for the manufacture of a lift arm assembly for a work vehicle includes a plurality of closely controlled process steps. The lift arm assembly is a large fabrication which, when assembled to the vehicle, interconnects with several other components and work implements. In order to properly connect with these other components, the various holes, throughbores, and connecting surfaces must be machined within close tolerances. The subject process provides the controls for holding the tolerances within specified and acceptable ranges. The lift arm assembly produced by the subject process is used for lifting and manipulating a bucket or other type of work implement.
