摘要:
A molded article, e.g., a cross car beam (3), which includes a rigid support (a) having a plurality of perforations, e.g., rigid support (12), and a rigid hollow thermoplastic member (b), e.g., an air duct (15), attached thereto is described. A portion of the thermoplastic material of rigid hollow member (b) extends through at least some of the perforations of rigid support (a), embedding the edges of the perforations therein. The thermoplastic material extending through the perforations forms an attachment means, e.g., an attachment head (24), that serves to fixedly attach rigid hollow member (b) to rigid support (a). Also described is a method of preparing the molded article of the present invention, in which the rigid hollow member (b) is fixedly attached to the rigid support (a) during the blow mold fabrication of rigid hollow member (b).

A thermoplastic pipe for installation in an existing conduit is manufactured in folded form and spooled for storage. The pipe is then reheated to make it pliable for installation and pulled into the conduit for lateral periods. Steam under pressure is used to round the installed pipe. The leading end of the replacement pipe may be restricted by an end clamp which enables hot fluid to pass completely through the pipe and heat the full length, or by an inflatable plug which is displaced to the leading end of the replacement pipe after installation. Methods and apparatus for the manufacturing of the pipe include extruding heated thermoplastic pipe material through a die to form a tubular shape, shaping the resulting hot tubular plastic material in the molten state to the folded form and cooling to provide a pipe with a memory for the folded form.

A thin, flexible tubular membrane provides a heat containment tube for inserting into and inflation within an underground conduit to be repaired. Folded rigid thermoplastic pipe is inserted into the tube while hot and flexible. The tubular membrane is pressurized to exclude unwanted fluids from within the existing conduit. Hot steam is injected into the tube to heat the pipe full-length externally and internally until flexible. The pipe is then rounded and expanded against the walls of the conduit with the tube therebetween. The rounding and expanding of the pipe is carried out progressively by moving a plug through the pipe and by injecting hot steam under pressure behind the plug.

DISCLOSED IS A PROCESS FOR BONDING PLASTIC LINERS IN METAL PIPE JOINTS. THE BORE OF THE PIPE AND THE EXTERIOR OF A TUBULAR LINER ARE COATED WITH A THERMAL ADHESIVE, THE LINER INSERTED INTO THE PIPE BORE, AND THE LINER HEATED INTERNALLY BY PASSING STEAM THROUGH THE LINER UNDER PRESSURE. THE FLOW OF STEAM THROUGH THE LINER IS CONTROLLED TO CAUSE HEATING OF THE LINER TO PROGRESS AXIALLY FROM ONE END OF THE PIPE. THE LINER IS THEN EXPANDED TO INTIMATELY CONTACT AND BOND TO THE BORE OF THE PIPE BY PRESSURIZING THE LINER WHILE HOT.

Making a plastic expansion joint having not more than two convolutions with a uniform wall thickness by inserting a hollow plastic liner into a molding member and applying heat sufficiently to cause the liner to become pliable and applying fluid pressure to the inside of the heated liner whereby the liner will assume the shape of the internal configuration of the member and simultaneously applying an axial force against both ends of the liner thereby pushing the liner into the member allowing the liner to maintain a uniform wall thickness as it assumes the internal shape of the molding member. An apparatus for making a plastic-lined expansion joint from a corrugated expansion joint having flanges at each end and a heated hollow plastic liner positioned therein with the liner ends extending out of the joint and including support means fixedly holding the ends of the expansion joint relative to each other with first and second end plugs engaging opposite ends of the plastic liner. One of the plugs including an air passageway for applying forming pressure inside of the liner. A flare sleeve encircling each end of the liner for supporting the liner with the sleeve being of a length to provide a length of tubing at each end for forming a liner-sealing flange, and a sealing clamp clamping the ends of the liner to the end plugs preventing loss of fluid pressure from the liner interior.
