摘要: The method includes the step of providing a cylindrical mandrel with vacuum openings around the circumference thereof and of a diameter substantially equal to the maximum diameter of the container. A thermoplastic strip is then wrapped around both the container and the mandrel, and just that portion of the strip enclosing the container is heat shrunk to follow closely the contour of the container. Then, the mandrel is withdrawn from the thermoplastic sleeve and that portion of the sleeve extending above the container is heat shrunk to engage snugly over the top of the container lid.

摘要: The present invention relates to improved apparatus for forming a tubular plastic sleeve immediately prior to its application to a rigid base article, such as a glass or plastic bottle. A rectangular blank of plastic material is wrapped around a cylindrical mandrel and seamed lengthwise thereon to form the tubular sleeve. The mandrel has a plurality of spline-shaped grooves in its curved peripheral surface and a stripper ring mounted to closely surround such peripheral surface to be slidable thereon. The ring has a plurality of internal lugs which slidably fit within the spline-shaped grooves. The mandrel has a lineal array of vacuum ports for retaining the leading and trailing edges of the plastic blank on the mandrel for its wrapping thereon, and an axial resilient strip mounted in the curved peripheral surface of the mandrel for operation of a movable, axially-extending sealing bar thereagainst. A wedge-shaped expansion member is also mounted in a wedge-shaped channel or groove in the mandrel peripheral surface between a pair of spline-shaped grooves. The expansion member is adapted to be moved vertically with respect to the mandrel for contraction of the mandrel diameter to release the newly-formed sleeve for its removal therefrom. The sleeve is then applied to a glass or plastic bottle for heat shrinking thereon in a thermoconstrictive operation. The apparatus is especially adapted to forming a wide range of thicknesses of a variety of heat-shrinkable thermoplastic materials into suitable tubular sleeves for telescopic mounting on such containers in a rapid, efficient manner.

摘要: There is disclosed a composite container manufactured from a blown glass bottle for packaging product under pressure, such as beer or carbonated beverage. Combined with the glass bottle is a wrap or covering of an organic polymeric material or combination of materials, such as foamed polystyrene, foamed polyethylene, foam-film laminates, or film cured in place from a powder, overlying the exterior of the bottle. The covering or wrap is of variable strength along the axial extent of the bottle. The composite bottle has the thickest or the strongest section of wrap overlying the upper part of the bottle, including the neck and shoulder of the glass wall of the bottle such that the strongest section of the wrap encloses or surrounds that portion of the bottle in the vicinity of the "head space" in the filled package. The head space contains compressed gas released from carbonation in the product, and the gas is at substantial pressure. Should breakage of the glass occur, the fracture pattern frequently extends throughout the bottle and fragments around the "head space" region (neck and shoulder areas) are propelled by the greatest force and at the greatest velocity. In coating the upper part of the bottle surrounding the head space with the thickest or the strongest part of the annular covering, the fragments are satisfactorily contained for a given amount and cost of coating material utilized in the package. The invention provides better safety for given amounts of coating material to be employed.

摘要: The disclosure relates to a machine for making a plastic covering on a rigid base article which in the illustrated form comprises a glass bottle and a conforming shrunken plastic covering thereon. The plastic is fed in oriented sheet form to the turret apparatus, cut into lengths and wrapped and seamed on successive mandrels as sleeves. Bottles are simultaneously processed to preheat condition and indexed over the sleeves, the latter telescopically assembled on the rigid base article, i.e. the bottle, and the combination carried to a heat tunnel. The plastic sleeve shrinks into snug surface fit on the adjacent surface portion of the rigid base article. The bottle is preheated in one of two embodiments by: (1) a preheat tunnel on the machine which raises the bottles from room temperature to about 220*F, or (2) the preheat is carried over as latent heat in the glass bottle from the annealing lehr, a part of the bottle manufacturing process. The machine includes novel subassemblies comprised of (1) a bottle chuck and loading station for assuring proper loading of the bottles on the machine, (2) bottle handling, (3) plastic strip handling and feed mechanism for placing oriented cut lengths onto mandrels of the turret, (4) the turret for making seamed sleeves in succession and feeding them onto registered bottles carried by the bottle handling apparatus, and (5) unloading device for transfer of the covered bottles to a conveyor and with said transfer smoothening the bottom surface of the covering on the bottle.
