A mat formed of a mixture of board particles and a bonding agent is conveyed to oppositely rotating rollers which compress said mat to a desired thickness as the mat passes therethrough. A conveyor associated with the rollers is provided for carrying the compressed mat between a pair of platens mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the continuously moving mat. As it passes between the platens, the mat is supported by a fluid bearing and is exposed to heat to cure the bonding agent. The platens are internally divided into separate subcompartments. The pressure in these subcompartments is regulated such that the mat is subjected to controlled pressures as it moves past the platens.

A continuously operating press for pressing a web of material together has a press zone at an input side a calibration zone at an output side. This press may be used in the formation of particle board by applying heat and pressure to press the web of material together to form the particle board. Preferably, the press has a lower press platen and an upper press platen that are pressed together to form the particle board. Both the lower press platen and the upper press platen preferably have a PTFE composite pressure pad. This composite pressure pad may have a layer of virgin PTFE and a layer of filled PTFE. The layer of filled PTFE is preferably partially compressed at a pressure of about 14.7 psi. After which, the layer of filled PTFE is preferably compression molded with the layer of virgin PTFE to form a composite. This composite may also be sintered and coined.

A friction reducing arrangement such as a slide or friction reducing coating extends over an entire width of a press area and is disposed on an upper and lower abutment, with the entering belts sliding over the friction reducing coating. A pressurized liquid lubricant is supplied to the friction reducing coating. The friction reducing coating extends over at least a main press area as well as a calibration area in which upper and lower slide coating extend parallel to one another. A friction reducing coating may also be provided in the pre-press area with the respective friction reducing coatings being bent or inclined so as to form a press gap. The lubricant is fed to the friction reducing surface of the friction reducing coating through openings formed in the friction reducing coating, with the openings not extending as far as the lateral edge of the friction reducing coating but being spaced therefrom.

Disclosed are heat-transmitting, anti-friction composites useful for example to reduce sliding friction between the stationary platens and moving belts of continuous hot presses used in the manufacture of consolidated board-like products such as fiberboard. In the disclosed embodiment, the composite comprises a brass sheet perforated in such a manner as to form a multiplicity of rigid prongs projecting transversely from one of its faces. An overlay sheet comprised of polytetrafluoroethylene or other solid lubricant is impaled on the prongs and adhesively bonded to the face of the brass sheet from which the prongs project. The prongs serve to inhibit the tendency of the overlay sheet to undergo plastic flow when subjected to stresses such as are caused by a belt sliding over it. The prongs also serve as paths for efficiently conducting heat through the overlay sheet.

A continuously operating press is described for the manufacture and/or coating of board webs consisting of a fleece or mat in which the press belts are supported on a lubricant film formed on a slide lining. For the marginal width adjustment of the press zone the slide linings are subdivided into a main zone and adjoining marginal strip zones respectively. In one embodiment of the invention transition zones are in each case provided between two of these slide lining zones and are either made groove-free or provided with blind grooves, which serve neither as supply nor as discharge for lubricant. In a further embodiment of the invention adjacent grooves in these slide lining zones are alternatively provided with supply and discharge openings for the lubricant.

Methods of compression molding powdered polytetrafluoroethylene resins to produce composite articles of manufacture having at least two distinct layers of two types of PTFE resin are disclosed. A first layer of resin, preferably including a filler, is placed in a compression mold and partially compressed at a relatively low pressure. A second layer of resin, preferably virgin resin, is then added to the mold and both layers are simultaneously fully compressed. After compression, the resulting composite preform is preferably sintered and coined to create a finished PTFE material or product. In a preferred embodiment, the partial compression step is performed at pressures of less than 500 psi. It has been found that modified PTFE resins provide improved resistance to cold flow and also provide better binding between filled and unfilled (virgin) layers and thus are used in certain preferred embodiments.
