    Abstract: An apparatus for squaring folded corrugated paperboard boxes and the like includes a frame, an upper drive assembly and a lower roll assembly. The upper drive assembly and lower roll assembly define a split-nip. The upper drive assembly includes a pair of independent wheels which may be controlled to adjust or change the orientation of a folded corrugated box passing through the nip. The upper drive assembly is pivoted to the frame for adjustment of the nip. The apparatus is positioned to deliver folded corrugated boxes to a counter/ejector from a folder/gluer.

    Abstract: A quality monitoring system employing vision processing equipment to photograph at least one of the edges of every folded-over box blank as it is conveyed through a box forming machine is used to determine in-line whether the blanks, when unfolded, will produce square boxes having essentially all 90.degree. angles between adjacent sides. The folded-over blanks have a manufacturer's gap between adjacent box side panels. The electronic images are electronically digitized and the resulting data processed by computer to calculate critical parameters of the folded-over blank, including gap width, longitudinal taper of the gap width, and alignment of the lateral edges of the panels surrounding the gap in relation to the lateral edge of the gap. Comparison of these measured critical parameters with corresponding parameters for an idealized box stored in the computer indicates the quality of the formed box and whether the quality falls within acceptable parameters. Provision is made in the system to photograph the blank upstream of or downstream of a squaring and stacking station of the folding machine, or in both positions.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method in the forming of packaging containers (1) which have sealing fins in which the packaging material is sealed inside-to-inside, and also projecting, double-walled corner flaps (8). In order to form a parallelepipedic packaging container, the corner flaps are folded down and sealed to the outside of the packaging container, which subjects a sealing fin running between the corner flaps to stresses which may entail untightness in the packaging container. This is avoided in that the sealing fin, prior to the downward folding operation, is deformed in that at least a portion of the fin (4) is laterally displaced in relation to adjacent portions of the fin.

    Abstract: A machine or machine section for squaring folded container blanks has a conveyor for conveying slotted and partially folded container blanks. A folding device completes folding of each container blank while being conveyed by the conveyor. A gauge plate is inserted in a slot in each of the slotted and partially folded container blanks. A mechanism moves the gauge plate in timed sequence with the conveyor, inserts the gauge plate in the slot before completion of folding of the respective blank in order to "square" the folded blank, and then withdraws the gauge plate from the slot. Overlapping flaps of each folded blank may be tacked together during "squaring" by drops of hot melt adhesive which subsequently hold the flat folded blanks square while the conventional slow drying water soluble glue dries. The "squaring" arrangement may be incorporated in a conventional gluer/folder machine.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an installation for the continuous production of presecured folded cardboard packing cases, this installation comprising essentially a glueing unit, a folding unit, a two-speed positioning station and a stapler, disposed in line.According to the invention, the positioning station comprises two devices (17 and 34) for transferring the sheets, the first of which (17) is formed by mechanical chains (18) with retractable studs (24a to 24d) and the second (34) consists of a "drive sandwich" formed preferably from two superimposed trains of mobile belts (37 and 52), the upper belt train (37) being moveable in height. These first and second transfer devices may be made respectively inactive and operational, in response to setting the glueing unit alone in operation and respectively operational and inactive in response to setting the stapler in operation.The belts (37,52) may be driven at the speed of passage of the sheets through the glueing unit, so that the installation of the invention may operate in a glueing mode without a reduction of productivity.

    Abstract: An apparatus for squaring a sleeve having at least one pair of opposed bevelled corners comprises a cradle having sleeve supporting members merging towards an apex but terminating spaced from the apex and having a support beam in the space between the members and the apex. The support members and support beam are arranged to conform with the outside shape of the sleeve in squared condition. An platen is moveable into a sleeve while the sleeve is supported in the cradle. The platen is shaped to substantially conform with the inside of the sleeve in squared condition and is moveable toward the apex to force the sleeve into conformity with the cradle and the support member and thereby square the box. Preferably an end closure pad applicator will apply an end closure pad to the squared sleeve while supported in the cradle and with the platen in place to resist pressure applied to the outside of the sleeve when the pad is being secured to the sleeve.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming flat cut carton blanks into erected cartons with debowed carton side panels is disclosed. The apparatus includes a forming head receiving and directing a carton blank through forming guides. Pinching wheels rotatably secured adjacent the forming guides include a pinching notch with a leading edge projecting inwardly into the forming head path. The pinching notch engages the descending carton bottom and side panels to capture and pinch the fold lines and overbreak the side panels at the fold lines between the carton side and bottom panels. An inclined surface with a sharp creasing edge abutting the inside of the fold line assists the pinching notch in creasing the fold lines. An extension edge formed adjacent a trailing edge of the pinching notch completes the overbreaking action. A release edge formed adjacent the leading edge gently releases the carton side panels from the overbreaking position upon counter rotation of the wheel. The height of the cutout opening allows each carton side panel to clear the upper periphery of the openings to prevent buckling. After debowing the side panels, a stripping edge of the pinching wheel engages the upper edge of the carton side panel to strip the erected cartons from the forming head during the ascending return stroke. Clearance notches provided in the forming head side walls serve to prevent interference contact between the pinching wheels and the forming head and also improve pinching engagement.

    Abstract: The disclosed squaring device utilizes an upper squaring carriage with compression belts and pneumatically actuated squaring fingers. In one embodiment, the upper squaring carriage includes at least three compression belts. At least one of the compression belts, central to the other belts, is positioned to apply direct pressure to the glued seam after the upper panels and lower panels are aligned. As a folded box reaches the end of the folding section and enters the squaring section, the moveable belt is raised so as not to apply pressure directly to the glued seam. The drive belts on either side of the seam maintain the box in compression. As the box approaches the squaring fingers, it passes a sensor that sends a signal to a programmable logic controller. At a selected time, depending on the conveyor belt speed, the controller actuates a pneumatic piston that drives a rack and pinion mechanism to rotate the squaring fingers into position to intercept the box travel. The bottom panel arrives at the fingers first, is stopped by the fingers, and slips on the lower conveyor belt. The upper compression belts continue to drive the upper panels forward until they arc also stopped by the squaring fingers, bringing the box precisely square. The squaring fingers are then retracted, permitting the squared box to continue through the machine. In a second embodiment of the inventive device the upper squaring carriage includes two compression belts, with squaring fingers positioned outward of the belts, with respect to the center line of the conveyor. The embodiments share the feature that the belts are controlled to exert a lower pressure on the boxes during the squaring operation and a higher pressure on the boxes after they are brought into square.
