A vehicle seat belt tension prediction system and method comprises an accelerometer having an output signal responsive to vertical acceleration of the vehicle, a seat weight sensor having an output signal responsive to the force exerted by a mass resting on the seat, and a processor means for calculating seat belt tension. The processor is provided with a plurality of inputs operatively coupled to the accelerometer output and seat weight sensor output. Suitable programming is provided to instruct the processor to calculate the average mass resting on the vehicle seat and predict the force that should be exerted on the seat for a measured level of vertical acceleration assuming zero belt tension. The processor then compares the actual force measured by the seat weight sensor with the predicted force to determine seat belt tension thereby obviating the necessity of complex hardware in physical contact with the seat belt system.

The occupant protection apparatus is provided with a steering angle sensor, a distance sensor and a brake depressing amount sensor. An electronic control unit predicts a vehicle crash based on the detection signals of each sensor so as to set a tension applied to a driver seat seatbelt to be smaller than a tension applied to passenger seat seatbelts. Additionally, the electronic control unit increases the tension applied to the seatbelts when a temperature detected by an outside-temperature detection sensor and/or an inside-temperature detection sensor is low.

A second embodiment is disclosed which includes an ancillary module disposed adjacent to the rear base of the occupant's neck, providing an airbag for inflation behind the occupant's head while simultaneously exerting a force opposite the direction of motion of the occupant's head, as caused by the backlash forces acting against the occupant following initial impact of the occupant with a forward airbag. A third embodiment is disclosed wherein an airbag is in incorporated into a child safety seat providing protection from frontal and lateral impact. A fourth embodiment is disclosed for rear seat passenger protection. A fifth embodiment is disclosed wherein an adult passenger seat is convertible into a child safety seat that can incorporate an airbag.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for the automatic release of a safety belt. A measuring device is used to measure the tensile force of the safety belt. Once the tensile force exceeds a limit a delay timer is started. After a predetermined time has expired the apparatus automatically releases the seat belt from a support. In one embodiment of the invention if the tensile force of the safety belt is exceeded again during the predetermined delay time the delay timer is started again from the beginning and the safety belt is only released after the predetermined delay time has expired after the last time the tensile force exceeded the limit. The apparatus also has devices for manually locking and releasing the safety belt from the support.
