摘要: When one strand, which is formed by gathering a multiplicity of glass filaments having a diameter of 9.mu. or less and formed by drawing molten glass flowed out through a multiplicity of orifices formed in the bottom portion of a bushing, is wound around a collet, the strand is wound to form a square-end cheese package by traversing the strand by a traversing device having a constant amplitude, while the strand is brought into contact with a rotative drum of a tension relaxing device to reduce the tension acting on the strand. Thus, the quality of a package of non-twisted glass yarn having a monofilament diameter of 3 to 9.mu. can be improved, a large quantity of the package can be formed, and the package can easily be transported.

摘要: A self supporting, helically wound package of yarn suitable for being payed out by withdrawing the yarn without collapse of the package is disclosed. The yarn comprises a strand of individual filaments, the strand having a primary cross-sectional shape and periodic flat spots with a flat cross-sectional shape which is more elongated than the primary cross-sectional shape. The package has edge portions positioned axially at the ends of the package, and the flat spots are positioned in the edge portions of the package.

摘要: A process for producing tapered windings of glass threads consists, downstream from a drawing device of glass filaments joined into a thread, in making the thread pass to the end of the arm of a dancing roller, then winding it on a support attached by one of its ends to a rotationally driven spindle. The thread is distributed on said support with the help of a thread guide reciprocated in parallel to the axis of said support, so as to obtain a winding tapered over at least part of its height.

摘要: An improved glass fiber winding apparatus including a pair of winding collets rotatably supported by a turret and separated by a movable winding shield. The collets are controllably rotated by the turret between a winding position and an unloading position. At the winding position, one collet is active for purposes of winding glass fibers, while the collet at the unloading position is inactive and the fibers wound upon that collet may be removed such that the collet is freed for future winding. The winding shield is interposed between the two collets so that debris, such as lubricants, are prevented from contaminating the inactive collet. The winding shield is configured such that it can be moved to avoid interference with the fibers during the process of moving a fully wound collet from the winding position to the unloading position. The collet moved from the unloading position is moved upon that collet. When the initiation of fiber winding is complete, fiber winding upon the fully would collet is terminated.

摘要: The present invention relates to an apparatus and methods for measuring the diameter variation of an elongated cylindrically shaped object. In particular, the instant invention relates to measuring the diameter variation of a moving strand comprised of multiple textile filaments. Using lasers and charged coupled devices (hereinafter referred to as "CCD's") for sensing the diffraction and interference patterns produced when electromagnetic radiation emitted from at least one laser is partially obscured by the edges of the strand.Several methods for extracting the information contained in the diffraction pattern may be employed. One method is based upon a comparison between the measured diffraction pattern and a theoretical pattern produced by a knife edge as calculated using the Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral. Others rely upon comparing the measured diffraction pattern with patterns previously produced by cylindrical objects of known diameter and stored in a computer library. The remaining methods are empirically based and may be implemented by algorithms which should be available on any small personal computer capable of performing a statistical analysis of data stored in an array or vector form. A feedback system for controlling the temperature of a fiber glass bushing assembly based on changing diameter measurements collected by the aforesaid apparatus is also disclosed.

摘要: A cylindrical collet is provided having moveable radial components which, when expanded, form a right angle cylinder capable of winding fibers. The components are moved between the expanded and compressed states, independent of the centrifugal force exerted by rotating collet. One technique of moving the components is by use of compressed air driving a piston coupled to the components.

摘要: A method of manufacturing glass yarns includes the steps of: forming a large number of glass filaments by drawing molten glass through a large number of orifices formed on the bottom of a bushing; forming a plurality of strands by separately gathering the large number of glass filaments after a sizing agent has been applied thereto with a plurality of gathering rollers aligned in such a manner that they are separated from each other by a predetermined gap; winding the plurality of strands on one winding tube mounted on a collet while traversing the strands by one traverse motion thereby forming one cake; drawing out the ends of the plurality of strands from the outer periphery of the cake and rewinding the cake in the state wherein the strands are separated from each other by a rewinder after the cake has been air dried; and winding each of the strands as a glass yarn on a bobbin while twisting it. In this method, the gap between adjacent gathering rollers, the drawing speed, and the rotational speed and shape of the traverse motion are set such that they ensure that the plurality of strands which are wound on the winding tube so as to form the cake are separated from each other by 2 to 3 mm, and that the average length of the adhered portions of the strands which are formed by being passed through the turns of the traverse motion is between 150 and 350 mm, thereby solving the problems involving the generation of fluffs and breakage of filaments and enabling glass yarns of good quality to be manufactured efficiently.
