    摘要: A method of fabricating a composite vessel encompassing rapid manufacturing that is applicable to composite hydrogen and other gas storage tanks, both for high-pressure cylinders, as well as low-pressure conformal tanks. The process of fabrication includes using a liner, of metal or plastic materials, over which a braided or developed preform is wrapped. The dry fiber wrapped liner is placed in a mold and resin injected into the cavity formed between the liner and the mold outer walls. The liner is flooded with heated and/or cooled pressurized fluid thus enabling complete and independent process control from within the liner for both the resin injection and the cure phases. Fiber placement control is determined through combined biaxial and triaxial braid/preform design, and by wrapping at controlled tension onto the supporting liner. Fiber tension control is further enhanced by the methodology of mold loading whereby tensioning forces are enacted during actual load and close. The process may use thermoset or thermoplastic resins and any of a variety of fibrous reinforcements such as carbon, boron, glass, natural, aramid or other fibers.

    摘要: A composite, carbon-carbon rotor or rotor hub (20) for use in power translating devices, such as in a turbine engine or in fluid pumps, includes a plurality of carbon-carbon laminate plies (P1-P25) layered to form the thickness of the rotor. The plies include alternating plies of cloth and spiral plies of fibrous material having different diameters to provide a desired variation in the cross-sectional configuration of the rotor. The individual spiral plies may vary in thickness from near the center to the outer edge and may be either tapered or formed to other contours. The cloth plies are positioned at predetermined orientations such that the strand axes are not aligned. These plies consist of fibrous carbon or graphite filament tape preimpregnated with a thermosetting polymer material, such as phenolic resin. The spiral plies are individual discs of resin impregnated fibrous carbon or graphite tow formed by winding the tow on a rotating shaft (54) having forming plates (56, 64) on both sides thereof to define the contour of the discs. The cross-sectional contour of the spiral plies is controlled by the forming face of the plates and by applying an appropriate tension to the tow during winding to completely fill the area between the forming faces during the winding process. The composite rotor or rotor hub is cured, pyrolyzed and densified using predetermined time/temperature/pressure cycles to form a high strength carbonized structure having orthotropic properties.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for strengthening the core of an insulated flexible duct formed of a helical wire wrapped with a flexible material. Strengthening tape is applied to the surface of the duct along its entire length. The apparatus for applying the strengthening tape is a tray having adjustable wiping arms. The wiping arms stretch the duct out as it is pulled through the tray, testing bonds securing the material around a reinforcing coil of wire. A roll of tape is mounted adjacent to the wiper arms and is automatically applied as the duct is pulled along the tray through the wiper arms. At least two wiper arms and continuous strips of tape along the longitudinal surface of the duct core are preferred.

    摘要: Disclosed is a hand tool for wrapping sealing tape such as unsintered polytetrafluoroethylene around the end region of threads on a cylindrical conduit or pipe. The tool includes a holder for a tape dispenser which has mounted thereon a tape cutter so that the dispenser with a roll of tape rotatably held therein is a complete unit usable independently of the tool. The dispenser has a flange, however, which is slid into a groove in the tool and held frictionally therein by a leaf spring in only one predetermined position so that the free end of the tape is presented between a grooved roller and the threads of the pipe. A third roller, mounted on the end of a hand operated lever, is spring-pressed against the opposite side of the pipe wall so that the grooved roller is pressed against the tape to force the tape into the threads, the tool being rotatable about the pipe to wrap one or more turns of tape around the pipe threads. The grooved roller is one of three rollers each having a different number of grooves per inch to adapt the tool for use with pipe threads having a range of pitches, the three rollers being mounted on a turret so that the appropriate roller can be selected and made effective for a given thread within the designed range of pitches.
