A generally flat coincidentally shaped compressible unmolded, non-preformed sealing member, which is larger than the inner plate, is retained between the outer and inner plates by a threaded stud and a threaded nut connecting the outer and inner plates, the tightening of which compresses the sealing member. Compression of the sealing member causes the periphery to deform and form a sealing edge. A vacuum passage passes through the outer plate, the sealing member, and the inner plate to permit a vacuum to be drawn when the assembly is placed against the surface of an item or object.

Within a suction cup is a plate which overlies the hole, and, when the suction cup is applied to the cargo, the end plate causes a valve stem associated therewith to open a valve to a vacuum source. The plate has a check design of ribs forming a large number of open bottom chambers and a conduit leading from each chamber to the suction cup carrier. The conduits are of such a size that they permit suction of those chambers closed by the said end of the cargo and prevent large quantities of air from flowing through those conduits in communication with the cargo hole.

Suction cup means grasp a sheet, preferably while magnetic roller means are not in contact with the sheet so that double sheeting is safely avoided, and then, by pivoting the pickup means, the sheet is contacted and held by magnetic roller means on the pickup arm, with the vacuum in the suction cup means then being released, before there is any motion of the sheet on a magnetic conveying belt so that tearing of the suction cup means and possible marking of the sheets are safely avoided.
