Provided is a method for production of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles, and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles produced according to the method. The nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles exhibit substantially superior cell transformation abilities as compared to known and commercially-available calcium phosphate kits. The nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles also find use in tissue engineering applications, for example bone and tooth engineering and repair applications.

The inventive method for producing strong base phosphates consists in forming a pulp consisting of an aqueous phase which contains a water-soluble calcium phosphate and a solid impurity-containing phase, in separating said phases, transferring calcium ions to a liquid phase by a strong base ions associated with forming the aqueous solution of the pure phosphate(s) of said strong base and in precipitating a pure water-insoluble calcium phosphate. Said method also consists in mixing phosphoric ores and acid in such a way that a pasty triple superphosphate composition is obtained and in adding water thereto in order to produce said pulp.

The inventive method for etching phosphate ores involves a single-pass digesting of ores whose P2O5 content is greater than 20% in weight by at least 10% in weight of a hydrochloric aqueous acid solution associated with an etching solution formation and the separation of the insoluble solid phase and the aqueous phase of said etching solution. Said method consists in pre-neutralising the etching solution by a neutralising agent prior to said separation in such a way that the etching solution pH which is less than pH to which an important part of phosphate ions in solution precipitates in the form of calcium monohydrogen phosphate (DCP) is adjusted and in subsequently neutralising said separated aqueous phase in such a way that a pure DCP is precipitated.

The present invention provides a method of manufacturing calcium phosphate powder comprising the steps of preparing a mixed material by mixing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) powder and calcium hydrogenphosphate powder so that a molar ratio (Ca/P) of calcium to phosphor is set to a range of 1.45-1.72; conducting a mixing/milling treatment to the mixed material to cause a soft-mechanochemical compositing reaction thereby to prepare a calcium phosphate precursor; and conducting a heat treatment to thus obtained precursor at a temperature of 600° C. or more thereby to prepare calcium phosphate powder. According to the present invention, the manufacturing process is simple and the manufacturing cost can be remarkably reduced. In addition, fine calcium phosphate powder excellent in characteristics can be easily manufactured in a short time.

Brushite (DCPD, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, CaHPO4-2HH2O) and octacaicium phosphate (OCP, Ca8(HPO4)2(PO4)4-5H2O) granules in the millimetre size range were prepared by using calcium carbonate granules of marble-origin as the starting material. The method of the invention comprised of soaking the marble granules in aqueous solutions containing phosphate and/or calcium ions at temperatures between 20° and 75° C. The load-bearing DCPD and OCP granules of this invention are useful in maxillofacial and orthopedic void/bone defect filiing and grafting applications.
