Process for the synthesis of a zeolite of MTT type in the absence of any nitrogenous organic agent, from a reaction mixture containing water, a source of tetravalent silicon and ethanol and optionally a source of trivalent aluminium and a source of hydroxide ions. The products obtained after heating the zeolite in air to 70.degree.-120.degree. C. or washing with water at 60.degree.-90.degree. C. are useful as selective organophilic adsorbents or as catalysts for the conversion of hydrocarbons.

A crystalline zeolite may be prepared which has a composition, in terms of mole ratios of oxides, in the range:1.0 to 1.3 Na.sub.2 O:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :2.1 to 8.0 SiO.sub.2and having a cancrinite-like structure in which the twelveing channel thereof is not blocked by, for example, salt molecules. The preferred compositions are of the formula:1.1 to 1.3 Na.sub.2 O:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :2.4 to 3.1 SiO.sub.2This zeolite may be prepared from crystallization of an aged reaction mixture containing aqueous ammonia, a source of silica, a source of alumina and sodium hydroxide.

New mineral polymers called polysialates have the empiral formula M.sub.n [--(Si--O.sub.2 --).sub.z --Al--O.sub.2 --].sub.n,wH.sub.2 O where z is 1, 2 or 3, M is sodium, or sodium plus potassium, n is the degree of polycondensation, and w has a value up to about 7. The method for making these polymers includes heating an aqueous alkali silico-aluminate mixture having an oxide-mole ratio within certain specific ranges for a time sufficient to form the polymer.

Synthetic Na,K-ferrierite, a molecular sieve zeolite capable of intracrystalline adsorption of molecules, is prepared by hydrothermal synthesis in the water, soda, potash, alumina, silica system. Crystallization is best achieved in the temperature range of 230.degree.-310.degree. C and autoclaving times of 2-96 hours with the use of co-precipitated silica-alumina gels and Na and K carbonates and bicarbonates.

A synthetic small pore crystalline zeolite having a structure and X-ray diffraction pattern similar to that of synthetic zeolite ZK-5 is prepared by digesting an aqueous reactant mixture containing silica, alumina, and either a mixture of potassium oxide and cesium oxide, or potassium oxide, cesium oxide and sodium oxide at a temperature of from 60* to 120*C. The zeolite product contains cesium cations as well as potassium cations in its as-synthesized form. A substantial portion of the cations is in an inaccessable position in the crystal lattice so that it is essentially unexchangable. The zeolite product is used as a selective adsorbent or as a catalyst after suitable modification by base exchange and deposition of a catalytically active metal.
