A method for continuously producing a mat of cellulose fibres intended for producing roofing elements made from bitumen-impregnated cellulose fibres, from a dilute slurry of cellulose fibres spread by a headbox on a dewatering fabric of a forming table having a predefined width, the dewatering fabric moving between an inlet of the forming table at the headbox side and an outlet of the forming table, moving the dilute slurry towards the outlet, gradually removing the liquids of the dilute through the dewatering fabric during the movement to obtain, at the outlet, the mat having a thickness of at least 2 mm, the dilute slurry having a certain level of pre-existing mineral materials. The method involves adding mineral material to the cellulose fibres by spraying a controlled quantity of aqueous solution or dispersion of mineral fillers over the width of the forming table onto the surface of the dilute slurry.

Methods of making the burnthrough resistant non-woven mat include forming the mat from glass fibers and at least two binders, a first binder having a vinyl component and a second binder having a strengthening component. The vinyl component may be, for example, ethylene vinyl chloride, and the strengthening component may be, for example, melamine formaldehyde. In one method, the vinyl component is added to the glass fibers by a beater addition process and the strengthening component is sprayed onto the glass fibers. The burnthrough resistant non-woven mat may be used in conjunction with an insulation blanket, and may be especially suited to use in insulating aircraft.

The web is conveyed supported by a transfer belt (9) through at least one web surface treatment apparatus such as a coater station (S1B) or a calender prior to passing the web to the first dryer cylinder group (1) of the paper- or boardmaking machine. One nip (11, 13) supported by a transfer belt (9) is suitable for dewatering simultaneously with the application of a treatment substance to the web. The dewatering nip (11, 13) may be formed between a transfer belt (9) and the wire (2) of the wire section or the felt (14) of the press section.

A new foam coated nonwoven fibrous mat having properties particularly suited for a facer on gypsum wallboard, laminates made therefrom and the method of making the mat is disclosed. The mat preferably contains a major portion of glass fibers and a minor portion of a resinous binder. The foam coating is permeable and reduces fiber dust and abrasion experienced in the past with relatively coarse, relatively inexpensive glass fibers in the mat. Contrary to previous methods, the foam coated fibrous mat is made in-line on a wet mat forming production line by applying a wet foam binder onto a wet, fibrous web followed by drying and curing in-line.

A method and apparatus for incorporating feature substances into a still moist but already sufficiently consolidated paper web provides for directing a feature substance suspension onto the surface of the paper web as a laminar jet with low jet pressure. A special pressure control circuit ensures that the jet pressure is always constant regardless of the number of parallel feature substance suspension jets directed onto the paper web. This makes it possible to incorporate a great variety of line codings in paper under the same process conditions without any visible changes in fiber structure occurring in the paper.
