Abstract: Engine valve actuation systems and methods used to decompress an engine cylinder during engine start-up, shut-down, and for bleeder braking are disclosed. An exemplary system may include a rocker arm pivotally mounted on a rocker shaft, and a structure mounted adjacent to the rocker arm in a fixed position relative to the rocker arm. A latch piston may be slidably disposed between the rocker arm and the structure. The latch piston may be selectively extended to engage both the rocker arm and structure to limit the pivotal motion of the rocker arm and maintain the engine valves in an open condition.

Abstract: To achieve an intermediate lock state in a short period when an engine is stopped and improve the accuracy of confirmation of the intermediate lock state, an engine valve timing control apparatus includes a variable valve timing mechanism configured to vary engine valve timing, and an intermediate lock mechanism configured to restrict relative rotation positions of a first and a second rotor of the valve timing mechanism at an intermediate lock position for starting the engine. Upon detection of an engine stop request, the valve timing mechanism and the intermediate lock mechanism are driven and controlled for establishing an intermediate lock state. When a predetermined period from detection of the engine stop request has expired without detecting the intermediate lock state within the predetermined period, an engine stopping process is executed. Even after the engine stopping process has been executed, monitoring of the intermediate lock state is continued.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine having a vacuum release mechanism that includes a centrifugally actuated member movably attached to the camshaft and having a vacuum release cam extending therefrom. The vacuum release cam is in lifting engagement with the exhaust valve assembly at crankshaft cranking speeds during a portion of the power stroke to relieve vacuum forces opposing motion of the piston. The vacuum release cam centrifugally pivots out of engagement with the exhaust valve assembly in response to the crankshaft attaining running speeds.

Abstract: The invention proposes a switchable tappet (1) for the direct transmission of a cam lift to a tappet push rod. A coiled compression spring (15), used as a lost motion spring, for loading the inner element (4) is shifted axially out of a housing (2). For this purpose, the inner element (4) comprises an extension (15a) that projects out of the housing (2) and is surrounded by the coiled compression spring (15). This measure contributes to minimizing the total mass of the switchable tappet (1) because the overall length of the housing (2) is shortened.
