Some annular members are made of a catalytically active material in order to exert a purifying action on the exhaust gases.

A compact, sound-attenuating muffler for an internal combustion engine or the like. The muffler has a divergently tapered partition located near the inlet of the muffler for dividing the exhaust gases into two pulse streams with similar sound frequencies to achieve sound attenuation when the streams are converged back together. The diverging partition creates a low-pressure volume or region on the partition's downstream side where unignited fuels may accumulate. The partition is formed with a passageway to provide communication of live fire from the inlet of the muffler to the low-pressure volume for ignition of any unignited fuel. A method of communication of live fire from the inlet of the muffler to the low-pressure volume on the downstream side of the diverging partition in the muffler also is described.

Disclosed is a sound-absorbing silencer having a diffuse reflection structure. The silencer includes a housing including an inlet and an outlet formed in respective ends thereof to allow noise to be introduced thereinto and discharged therefrom and a noise-attenuating unit disposed in the housing to attenuate noise through diffuse reflection and absorption of the noise. The noise-attenuating unit includes a first diffuse reflection pipe disposed in the housing while being spaced apart from the housing, at least one second diffuse reflection pipe accommodated in the first diffuse reflection pipe while being spaced apart from the first diffuse reflection pipe to form a noise-attenuating path therebetween so that noise is diffusely reflected and absorbed while flowing through the noise-attenuating path, and a sound-absorbing member disposed between the first diffuse reflection pipe and the housing and in the second diffuse reflection pipe to absorb noise diffusely reflected in the noise-attenuating path.

An exhaust muffler system for use on a motorcycle or four-wheeled vehicle provides for operation in either of two modes, a regular configuration that provides a high degree of noise reduction, or a racing specification that provides for a freer-flowing exhaust. Without changing the main body of the muffler, an operator can choose between a quieter, public road setting or a louder, high performance setting. The muffler is provided with two interchangeable spark arresters, and a main body having multiple expansion chambers therein, defined by bulkheads. When a regular spark arrester is installed, exhaust gas passes through one bulkhead three times, greatly reducing the noise produced. With the spark arrester removed, the exhaust gas passes straight through to the open air, enhancing performance. A seal is provided between the bulkheads and the spark arrester, which provides for extension or retraction in the lengthwise direction of the tail pipe.

The muffler comprises a main sound arresting chamber formed in the interior of an outer cylinder of the muffler and a bracket fixedly secured to the outer surface of the outer cylinder for mounting the muffler on a body of a motorcycle. The muffler is provided with an auxiliary sound arresting chamber formed in the interior of the bracket and communicating with the main sound arresting chamber through a connecting passage so as to increase the total volume of the sound arresting chamber, thereby permitting the output of the engine of the motorcycle to be enhanced while the sound arresting effect on the exhaust gas is improved. The main sound arresting chamber may be divided into an upstream side main sound arresting chamber portion and downstream side main sound arresting chamber portions by partition means and the auxiliary sound arresting chamber portion communicates with the upstream main sound arresting chamber portion. The connecting passage may be in the form of a plurality of small diameter holes. The outer cylinder may be provided with plating liquid drain holes communicating with an end of the auxiliary sound arresting chamber so as to expedite drain of the plating liquid during the plating process, the plating liquid drain holes being blocked by a baffle member incorporated in the interior of the outer cylinder.
