The electronic control unit further controls the engagement rate of the fan clutch based on a value of the air conditioner requested engagement rate after execution of the upper limit guarding process.

A cooling fan assembly, and method of operation, for use in an engine compartment of a vehicle is disclosed. The cooling fan assembly includes an electric motor having a motor shaft extending therefrom, a one-way clutch bearing mounted on and rotating with the motor shaft, and a cooling fan. The cooling fan includes a central hub with fan blades extending from the central hub. The central hub engages the one-way clutch bearing such that torque is transmitted from the motor shaft to the central hub in a first direction of rotation and torque is not transmitted from the motor shaft to the central hub in an opposed direction of rotation.

According to the invention, for the transmission of torque between the drive wheel (7) and the shaft (4), an electromagnetically actuable friction-disk clutch (9, 10, 11, 12) and a second clutch device in the form of an eddy-current clutch (14) are provided, the latter taking up the shaft (4) when the friction-disk clutch is out of engagement. A device for transmitting movement to a fan for cooling the coolant in a motor vehicle has a shaft on which the fan is mounted by means of an idle support, and a first electromagnetic clutch, engagement of which causes rotation of the fan at a speed equal to that of the shaft. A second clutch causes rotation of the fan at a speed lower than that of the shaft or at zero speed. The second clutch has an actuator coaxially displaceable, in both directions, with respect to the shaft, but idle upon rotation of the latter. A coupling which is coaxially locked in rotation with the shaft is connected to the actuator and is suitable for engagement with the rotor of the second clutch.

When no current is imposed on the electromagnet, the clutch does not engage and the fan remains stationary with respect to the rotating driveshaft. Depending on the amount of current imposed on the electromagnet, the fan will either rotate at a speed slower than the drive shaft or, when maximum current is imposed, the fan will be rotated at the same speed as the rotating driveshaft.
