The disclosed embodiments of the cryogenic-based nitrogen and argon producing air separation units and associated air separation cycles include the means for directing a first portion of a boil-off stream from an argon condenser of the air separation unit to a waste expansion refrigeration circuit and concurrently recycling a second portion of the boil-off stream from the argon condenser to the main air compression system of the air separation unit to be mixed or blended with the incoming feed air. Optionally, a third portion of the boil-off stream from the argon condenser may be further compressed in a cold compressor and returned to the lower pressure column.

A system and method for argon and nitrogen extraction from a feed stream comprising hydrogen, methane, nitrogen and argon, such as tail gas of an ammonia production plant is provided. The disclosed system and method provides for nitrogen-argon rectification and the methane rejection within a column system comprised of at least one distillation column. Nitrogen and argon are further separated and to produce liquid products. An argon stripping column arrangement is disclosed where residual argon is further removed from the methane-rich fuel gas and recycled back to the feed stream.

This invention is directed to a method for recovering, purifying and recycling an inert gas on a continual basis in connection with a silicon crystal pulling process. Silicon oxide impurities generated during the crystal growth process are completely oxidized by in-situ oxidation with a regulated amount of an oxidizing source gas mixture to form silicon dioxide impurities, which can be removed by a particulate removal device. The particulate-free effluent enters a purification unit to remove the remaining impurities. The inert gas emerging from the purification unit can be fed back into the crystal puller apparatus and/or mixed with the oxidizing source gas mixture. As a result, the ability to increase silicon crystal throughput, quality and at the same time reduce the costs associated with recycling the inert gas can be achieved.

A system for the purification and recycle of impure argon is disclosed herein. The system of the present invention can produce very high purity argon, i.e., about 1 ppb or less of impurities. In one embodiment, a cryogenic separation apparatus is used to remove the nitrogen, hydrocarbon, and hydrogen impurities from the argon stream. A catalyst bed is then operated at ambient temperature to remove hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide impurities to provide the purified argon product.

A process for purifying argon to obtain a high-purity argon from argon gas containing at least nitrogen, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and methane, including a first step of adding air or oxygen to the argon gas in an amount sufficient to oxidize the contained carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst while maintaining a temperature sufficient to oxidize the contained carbon monoxide without substantially oxidizing the methane, a second step of adding hydrogen into the argon gas obtained in the first step and reacting the contained oxygen with the hydrogen into water in the presence of a catalyst, a third step of removing the carbon dioxide and the water from the argon gas obtained in the second step by use of an adsorbent, and a fourth step of cooling the argon gas obtained in the third step, introducing the argon thus cooled into a distillation column and performing distillation by use of a reflux containing argon as a main component to remove nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane, thereby recovering a high purity argon gas.

The present invention is directed to a method for recovering argon from a feed mixture comprising argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen which comprises the steps of (a) purifying the feed mixture to remove contaminants, (b) compressing the purified feed mixture to a separation pressure, and (c) passing the compressed purified feed mixture through a pressure swing adsorption system to separate carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and all or most of the nitrogen from the mixture as adsorbed products and to produce an argon-rich fraction as a non-adsorbed product. The argon-rich fraction from step (c) may be further purified by passing the fraction to a cryogenic fractional distillation system to separate hydrogen and any remaining nitrogen from the fraction as a distillate product and to produce a pure argon product. In a second and third embodiment, the invention is directed to a method for recovering argon from a feed mixture comprising argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen, wherein oxygen is removed from the argon-rich fraction exiting the pressure swing adsorption system in step (c) by passing the fraction to a second pressure swing adsorption system before or after further purification of the fraction in a cryogenic fractional distillation system.
