A housing is provided for stowing the combiner. A mechanism includes a motor and is configured to the move the combiner between a stowed position wherein the combiner is located fully within the housing and a display position wherein the combiner is at least partially located outside of the housing and viewable by the occupant. A cover is configured to close over the housing when the combiner is in the stowed position, and the cover is movable to allow the combiner to move into the display position. The mechanism is configured to automatically stow the combiner under certain conditions.

The mounting apparatus provides a crash-release feature which permits the pilot's display unit to breakaway forwardly upon impact and to be constrained in a forward position to prevent the display unit from rebounding violently rearwardly toward the pilot's head. The mounting apparatus further provides a quick-replacement capability which permits fast and easy removal and installation of the pilot's display unit with a minimum of tools and no need for realignment.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for assisting a user, wearing a head mounted display (HMD) that covers a user's field of vision and has a tracker providing information regarding the position and orientation of the HMD, in locating a physical controller located on a physical base station. A processor causes the HMD to display a virtual world, including a virtual representation of the physical base station and physical controller along with a virtual hand that helps guide the user to the physical base station to allow the user to pick up the physical controller. Another embodiment allows an area in the physical world to be defined within which the user should remain, for example to avoid physical obstacles. The processor causes the HMD to display a warning, such as a virtual fence, to alert the user if the user approaches to within a preselected distance of the boundary.
