    摘要: The present invention relates to magnetic toner imaging-multiplexing techniques and apparatus wherein the number of required voltage drivers is substantially reduced. The apparatus includes a multi-pole magnet assembly surrounded by a shell-like member operatively coupled to a drive motor for creating relative motion between said magnet assembly and said shell-like member. A multiplicity of helical, highly permeable electrodes are circularly disposed around the periphery of the shell member with electrical connections to external voltage drivers through a slip-ring assembly. Magnetic imaging toner is circulated across the toner electrodes as a result of the relative motion between the shell and the magnet assembly. Field concentrating apparatus is disposed within the shell adjacent to a dielectric drum on which the intelligible image is to be produced. As the toner is circulated across the shell, a toner tree or brushlike pile of toner is formed at points where the toner electrodes intersect the magnetic field from the concentrating apparatus and the dielectric drum. Dots of toner are deposited on the drum at these points when the electrodes are driven to a suitable electrical potential. A modification of this apparatus incorporates a plurality of magnetic wire pins arranged parallel to the axis of the shell in diagonal arrays there across. Field concentrating members extend parallel to the shell axis and cause toner trees or brushes to be generated at the line of pins normal to the magnet pole faces as the magnet assembly is moved relative to the shell.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for the delivery of electrostatically charged toner particles to an image receiving member using a traveling electrostatic wave toner conveyor. The traveling electrostatic wave toner conveyor is overlaid with barrier electrodes that divide the conveyor into parallel columns, forming isolated potential wells to receive pixel packets of toner. An ejector electrode in registry with each conveyor column modulates the quantity of toner in pixel packets that travel along the parallel conveyor columns. The quantity in the packets is responsive to the modulated voltage applied to the ejector electrode. Focusing electrodes transfer pixel packets from the traveling wave conveyor as toner jets focused onto the image receiving member. A repulsive dc bias is applied to the barrier electrodes to confine toner within the conveyor columns. Another embodiment includes an image transfer conveyor similarly overlaid with barrier electrodes. A toner supply conveyor (or four such conveyors for CMYK toners) supplies pixel packets to the transfer conveyor. An ejector electrode on the supply conveyor in registry with each conveyor column ejects toner from the supply conveyor to the transfer conveyor in response to modulated voltage. A corresponding attraction electrode on the transfer conveyor, in registry with each ejector electrode on the supply conveyor and subjected to voltage of opposite polarity, attracts toner from the supply conveyor to the transfer conveyor. CMYK toners are of equivalent particle size small enough to reduce the granularity of continuous tone images below the threshold of visibility. Multiplexing is accomplished by four ejector electrodes, positioned one ahead of another by one-fourth the transfer conveyor wavelength and energized together through a common bus electrode.

Non-conductive, non-magnetic toner having approximately a 5-20 micron mean particle size is electrically charged to a level of at least about 8 micro Coulombs/gram and then a first roller with a conductive surface is brought into operative association with the electrically charged toner so that toner particles adhere to the surface. The toner particles are preferably maintained in an electrostatic fluidized bed, and charged by a corona element in the bed. An array of pin or stylus primary electrodes are selectively energized or de-energized to provide no-write or write condition, respectively using a computer to switch the electrodes into or out of operative connection to a source of electrical potential. The toner particles are transferred from the first roller to a substrate either directly (after passing past the primary electrodes), or they are first transferred to a second roller which then brings the toner particles into contact with the substrate. If a second roller is utilized, the primary electrodes can be in association with the first roller, or between the first and second rollers for transferring only "write" toner to the second roller.
