Damping of mechanical oscillation in a shaft that is provided by feedback wherein the output signals of multiple feedback devices are negatively coupled and added to a desired speed signal of a motor speed controller of the driving motor is disclosed. At least one sensor and/or measuring system can be provided for measuring an actual position value. The actual speed of the shaft can be determined by differentiation from the shaft position value measurements or by integration from shaft acceleration measurements. The measured or actual speed of the shaft can be supplied as an input signal to each feedback element. Each feedback element is specifically tuned to an oscillation frequency range of the shaft that is to be damped. The invention provides an easy and cost-effective way of damping mechanical oscillations that have limited frequency ranges.

A discriminating device judges that the workpiece is being machined by the tool when levels of output signals generated from at least two of the vibration sensors are higher than respective predetermined threshold levels, and judges that the workpiece is not being machined by the tool when the level of an output signal generated from less than two of the vibration sensors is higher than a predetermined threshold level. Also disclosed is a method for discrimination between the machining and non-machining states.

A system for monitoring the vibration of a power driven cutting tool during machining first produces a signal proportional to the vibration spectrum of the tool over a preselected band width. This is passed through a digitally controlled attenuator which is adjusted to provide an output signal at a preselected level. The degree of attenuation is stored, as is a reference value which is generated as a function of the attenuated signal. Then, during subsequent machining operations under the same machining conditions the attenuator is controlled to provide the same degree of attenuation and the reference value, which is in the form of a digital signal, is compared with the rectified and digitized output of the attenuator. When the latter exceeds the reference value a control signal is generated which either provides an audible or visual warning that the cutting tool is worn and therefore due for replacement or initiates an automatic tool changing operation. The system effectively monitors the wear of the tool and, in providing its own reference, i.e. the reference value which is generated, caters automatically for changes in the machining conditions such as use of a different tool or change in workpiece material.

The preprocessor will adjust itself for optimum operation and communicate the operation modes to the main instrument. An apparatus for detecting machining states of a workpiece in a machine tool comprises a non-contact type displacement detector for detecting a radial bending displacement of a spindle in a region between a machining point and a front bearing of a tool spindle or a work spindle. The displacements correspond to states under which the machine tool starts operating, and the tool contacts the workpiece to various unfinished faces, a machining state and a machining surface condition of the workpiece during machining. By inputting the detection signal to different frequency band pass filters, the machining states and the workpiece surface condition are discriminated. A set of comparators compare the output signals from the frequency band pass filters with set reference values. The respective machining states are judged from the comparative results. Comparative judgment signals are inputted to a control unit, thereby controlling the machine tool to automatically perform appropriate machining operations.

A method of controlling chatter in a rotating, chip cutting machine tool cutting at a predetermined depth on a workpiece in which the speed of rotation of the cutting tool relative to the workpiece and the rate of speed of the cutting tool relative to the workpiece both adjustably controlled between predetermined minimum and maximum rates for the particular combination of machine tool and workpiece material. The method includes the steps of detecting vibration signals representative of relative vibrations between the machine tool and the workpiece and generated by preliminary operation of the machine tool at predetermined conditions, processing that generated signal as a function of signal frequency, obtaining a signal indicative of the rotational speed and determinating the threshold of the signal level above which are excluded harmonics of the predetermined rotational frequencies that are indicative of chatter in the cutting tool. Additional steps interrupt the feed of the cutting tool and change the speed of rotation if operationally generated audio signal levels exceed a threshold and then change the speed of rotation of the cutting tool and resume the feed of cutting engagement. These steps are repeated until operation of the machine tool is obtained without operationally generated chatter signals exceeding the threshold or, when necessary, reducing the speed of rotation and the rate of feed to predetermined levels known to avoid generation of chatter signals in excess of the threshold.
