The invention relates to a method for the automatic operation of a vehicle door (1), in particular a side door, or a rear hatch of a motor vehicle, from a first to a second position, by means of a drive (5; 26), connected to a controller (6), which acts on the vehicle door (1), by means of at last one transfer element (12; 30). The invention further relates to a device for carrying out said method. According to the invention, an automatically operated vehicle door (1) in the first position thereof, may be simply swung into the second position thereof at the same speed, even with differing street inclinations where the vehicle is standing, whereby, after activating the drive (5), the speed of the relevant vehicle door (1) is measured within a given angular range and compared with a set value curve. So long as the measured actual value for speed of the vehicle differs from the given set value curve, the speed of the door is changed until the speed as given by the set value curve is achieved.

A motion control system includes a single stage gear reducer and power screw, a brushless variable-speed electric motor with position and velocity sensing instrumentation, a solid state power amplifier, and a programmable controller. During operation an absolute positional reference is established when the slide actuates a non-contacting limit switch to signal that the slide is within less than one motor revolution of the correct starting point. A memory accessible by a microprocessor has paired values of velocity and position stored in a table representing ideal such values for deceleration portions of the motion cycle. Alternatively, the microprocessor computes each new value of position and velocity in real time as required to update the velocity commands sent to a comparator. The comparator compares the predetermined slide position to the actual slide position and signals the microprocessor that a change in output to the motor power supply is required. A digital to analog converter converts the motor velocity signal that issues from the microprocessor to a variable d.c. voltage whose magnitude varies over a range that determines the sense of direction and speed of the drive motor.

A method for dynamically controlling a driver of a nip roller in a web printing press includes controlling the speed of the driver in a tension-control mode during a phase of printing press operation and in a velocity-control mode during another phase of printing press operation. The controlling of the speed of the driver in the tension-control mode is based on the tension in the web upstream of the nip roller so as to maintain the tension at a desired tension value. The controlling of the speed of the driver in the velocity-control mode is based on a predetermined driver velocity ratio for maintaining the web tension. The tension-control mode may be employed during press start-up as the web accelerates to operating speed. The velocity-control mode may be used during printing operations of the press.
