A method for the synthetic generation of a digital audio signal by means of periodic sampling of a waveform shall permit the user a particularly simple and intuitive access to the changing and creative transformation of the waveform on which the sampling is based. For this purpose, according to the invention, the waveform is specified by using control points, which, in addition to position parameters, may contain further attributes, of which the parameters and attributes can be changed individually over time by means of control signals or spontaneouseous intervention. The control-point values which result in this way can be interpreted either as direct amplitude-period phase or as magnitude-frequency or phase-frequency pairs. A continuous waveform is generated by interpolation or approximation of the control points and the parameters/attributes of the latter, which assume a time-specific value depending on the current control signals and other influences, and is used for further processing, e.g. spectral band limiting.

The present invention relates to economically fabricated means for the generation and processing, member selection, and acoustic radiation of pluralities of individual tone currents originating from at least one high frequency source and formed by note-information temporarily transferred through key depression, from permanent electronic memories to temporary memories in small numbers of standard tone units, in precise duplication of properties of pipe organ sound.There is described an electronic transfer organ for duplicating twenty-six known properties of pipe organ sound. The illustrative, inventive instrument employs completely standardized circuitry except for automatically programmable memories for each organ voice, which contain all the information required to form, switch and variously decouple all the notes in that voice. When keyboard keys are depressed, the information for corresponding notes is transferred to temporary memories in small numbers of tone units which then generate and switch the individual notes, without recourse to separate and permanent individual circuitry for each note. Dynamic keyers duplicate the keying effects of tracker action pipe organs. Sigmoid switches impart individualized tonal attack and decay patterns which preserve smooth keying at all speeds. All tone frequencies, derived ultimately from at least one high frequency source, are randomly independent in phase, and remain permanently in the various degrees of optimal mistune which characterize organ pipes in good tune. A four-channel sound system implements the effects of the tone frequency decouplings, and of a plurality of multiresonant filter sets, which together duplicate the collective sound of organ pipes distributed in various arrays within pipe enclosures. Construction is modular by keyboard and associated elements. Keyboard modules are subject to intercoupling by electronic or other means, and to augmentation by various devices in the prior art which effect expressive playing and moderate and musical fluctuations of tones, which are characteristic of organ pipe sound.

The invention relates to an apparatus for producing a vibrato effect in acoustic signals, particularly for electronic organs, in which the output signals are obtained by successively scanning a plurality of points of a delay line fed by the acoustic signals. The apparatus includes a scanning matrix having a field of first inputs each connected to one of the points to be scanned, a field of second inputs to each of which a scanning impulse can be successively fed by a scanning impulse generator, and a linking circuit associated with each pair of second inputs, which linking circuits, upon the occurrence of a scanning impulse at the second input, transmit the acoustic signal of the associated first input to a common output, the scanning impulse generator producing impulses of a shape in which the rising and falling flanks are in the form of transition sections extending over a predetermined period, each linking circuit comprising a control stage which is controlled by the scanning impulse and influences the amplitude of the acoustic signal fed to the output. The individual points of the delay line are scanned electronically by means of the scanning matrix. The scanning impulses not only serve to select the desired point but also for gradually blending in and out the acoustic signal at the selected point. Consequently, one obtains a complex vibrato which is pleasant to listen to, without superpositioning background noise caused by the switching frequency.

This disclosure deals with significant innovations on an electronic apparatus for producing special effects by shifting the frequencies of audio signals through the use of the phase shifter technique for single sideband production. These innovations or the combination thereof consist of (1) the use of a beat frequency oscillator with two outputs in 90* phase relationship to facilitate frequency shifts of any amount and sign, exceeding the limitations of previously known phase shifter type audio frequency shifters by being capable of producing detuning effects down to and through zero frequency shift with a transition into sideband reversal, (2) the inclusion of an improved cascaded wideband audio frequency phase shifting circuit, (3) the addition of an inverse phase output circuit for the simultaneous production of an additive and a subtractive frequency shift, and (4) the exploitation of known means for making the beat frequency local oscillator voltage controllable.

The invention is directed to modulation of the amplitude and frequency of an audiofrequency signal by passing the signal through at least two parallel channels, with phase-shifting circuitry in the channels providing signals of opposed phases. A low-frequency band is filtered from the signal in one of the channels and a high-frequency band is filtered from the signal in another of the channels and the signals shifted back into phase. The filtered signals are then combined into an output signal. The high- and low-frequency bands filtered from the signals are selectively varied to induce vibrato, tremolo, and other tonal effects into the output signal. In a preferred form of the invention, the high- and low-pass filters are matched so as to form substantially a 180* phase shift stage with a flat frequency response. Four stages are coupled to provide 720* of phase shift. The original audiofrequency signal is then summed with the phaseshifted signal in approximately equal proportions to produce a coordinated effect substantially duplicating that produced by a rotating speaker. The phase shift is started and stopped in a manner to duplicate the dynamic effects of starting and stopping a rotating speaker. A dual channel system is described for duplicating a multiple speaker system.
