    摘要: A grounded surface distribution apparatus and system is provided including elastomer encapsulated cable terminals, joints, taps, load-break switches, current limiting fuses and surge protectors, each enclosed completely within a metal sheath combined in various arrangements to perform operational functions required in loop and radial underground distribution systems. The cable terminals include a soft dielectric filler making a void-free interfacial engagement with the surface of a hard dielectric filler of a mating component. To provide for breaking a coupling under load, an arc-quenching follower is retractable into an axial cavity in the coupling components of the system and projectable therethrough upon breaking of the circuit and disconnecting of the components to provide an improved arc-quenching function. Thus, there is provided an underground system having security, operational safety and convenience.

    摘要: An electrical device in the form of an electrical connector for making a connection between complementary electrical contacts, shown in the form of a pin and a socket, under high voltage fault conditions, the device including a sleeve of arc-quenching material for guiding the pin into contact with the socket, the sleeve being axially spaced from the socket to provide a gap between the sleeve and the socket, and a metallic tubular member surrounding the gap and contacting the socket, the wall of the tubular member being radially spaced from the pin such that the gap has a longitudinal length no less than the order of magnitude of one-half the distance between the pin and socket at which an arc will be struck between the pin and the socket as the pin approaches the socket under high voltage fault conditions and a lateral width no less than the order of magnitude of one-half the same arc-strike distance.

    摘要: A rotatable switch blade engages and disengages stationary contact assembly through a slot in a generally sector-shaped insulating housing enclosing the contact assembly and formed by either a pair of stationary plates or by a single molded piece of plastic arc extinguishing material. The housing has one or more generally radially extending slats of plastic arc extinguishing material which are located in a groove or grooves on one side of the slot and are biased transversely into a registering groove or grooves on the other side of the slot. The distal end of the switch blade successively engages the outer ends of the slats and displaces them transversely of the slot as the switch blade rotates toward the switch closed position. The reverse procedure occurs when the switch blade rotates toward the switch open position accompanied by arc confining and extinguishing action of the slat or slats and the housing.

    摘要: A current limiter which is electrically arranged in series with a circuit breaker, the current limiter having contacts which are movable with respect to one another in an axial direction. A spring having a nonlinear characteristic is provided for producing a force which tends to counteract the motion of the contacts away from one another. While the contacts are in a closed position, the spring exerts a small closing force, thereby permitting the contacts to open by the force of overcurrent. Such opening produces an arc which causes a wall of arcing chamber to emit gas, thereby pressurizing the arcing chamber and causing further opening of the contacts. As the contacts are opened, the nonlinear spring characteristic increasingly tends to prevent the motion of the contacts, thereby reducing mechanical stress within the limiter.
