A device useful both as a switch and power limiter and particularly adapted for use in microwave application. The device is made with conventional FET processing technology, a current conducting layer being formed at a surface of a substrate, the device then being electrically isolated by using any one of a number of conventional processes. Ohmic contacts are deposited to make electrical contact at the conducting layer. A groove is then cut with a focused ion beam across the conducting layer and between the ohmic contacts. The length of the groove controls the threshold voltage for the device and the depth controls the saturation current. Very low values of saturation current can be obtained by controlling the groove dimensions thus significantly reducing the DC power drain when the device is operated just above saturation. A very high differential resistance ratio is obtained by adjusting the threshold voltage of the device.

An acoustic surface wave bubble switch in which a magnetic bubble domain traveling in a thin film magnetic platelet can be guided in alternate directions by application of an acoustic wave. An array of longitudinal magnetic elements in the form of single bars and bars combined to form a T configuration together with a rotating in-plane magnetic field causes the magnetic bubble to propagate across the magnetic platelet. One of the configurations of the magnetic element is a T with a second horizontal bar and the bubble will have equal attraction for either of the horizontal bars. At the proper time an acoustic wave can direct the bubble to propagate in the direction of a chosen horizontal bar thereby effecting a switching action.

A driving circuit for a magnetic head that is used for modulating magnetic field in a magneto-optical disk drive is provided, which reduces power consumption even if the magnetic head has large inductance. The driving circuit comprises a switching circuit for generating pulse-like drive current in synchronization with a timing for applying a pulse of light in accordance with a space between pits to be recorded on a magneto-optical disk, and a conversion circuit for converting the pulse-like drive current into sine-wave current to be supplied to the magnetic head such that the maximum magnetic field can be obtained at the timing for applying a pulse of light.
