A method for converting characters represented by a 16-bit character encoding standard or a numeric string into bar code symbols computes three values for the 16-bit code or numeric string. These three values are encoded into three bar code codes. Counts associated with the bar code codes are retrieved, along with character font data. Both the bar code symbols and the human-readable characters are printed on a bar code label. The printing apparatus includes a central processing unit for performing the above method, intercoupled with a bar code printer, memory, and secondary storage. A bar code reader similarly includes a central processing unit intercoupled with memory, secondary storage, and a bar code reader. This bar code reader scans the bar code symbols and decodes them into standard bar code codes. Groups of three codes are converted into three numeric values. The hexadecimal equivalent of these three numeric values is computed. The particular character represented by this hexadecimal value is retrieved from a 16-bit character encoding standard. The character, or the hexadecimal value of the character, is output for use in other applications.

A dynamic barcode label system includes label base with a plurality of discrete preprinted barcode character media positioned thereon in side by side relation to form a single barcode indicia sequence. The label base includes a face wall with an elongated window formed therethrough and a rear or backing wall. The barcode character media comprise barcode character strips having a plurality of barcode indicia sets printed thereon and representing a plurality of respective characters. The character strips are slidably adjusted relative to the window to select the characters to be represented by the label. The character strips can be formed as endless barcode character bands supported on a character band support on the rear wall of the label base. In one embodiment of the present invention, the label base is sheet material and the barcode character media are adhesively backed barcode decals, each of which has printed thereon a barcode indicia set representing a single character or symbol. The barcode decals are adhered to the label base in side-by-side relation to form a single barcode indicia sequence.

The just-printed printing image is scanned after printout of a portion of the printing image on the paper web by means of an opto-electronic sensor which can move relative to the paper web, reading the just-printed printing image in the process. The read result is compared and checked with the originally entered data and, if an error is detected, the remainder of the printing image still to be printed or the just-printed printing image is marked by the printer as unusable, e.g., blackened.
