A machine for injecting liquids. An air booster pump is adapted to receive injectate. The air booster pump is in fluid communication with one or more heads having apertures for nozzles. A hollow tube is preferably, but not necessarily, located within each head and is in fluid communication with the air booster pump. Injectate flows from the air booster pump into the head, preferably through the apertures in the wall of the hollow tube. Preferably, but not necessarily, the head is designed so that upon installation one point of the inside of the head will be at the highest elevation. Near such point the head has an escape aperture so that any gas within the injectate that enters the head will tend to flow to and through such escape aperture. Furthermore, a return line preferably, but not necessarily, takes injectate that flows through the escape aperture to the low-pressure side of the air booster pump. And also, a drain, in a work surface to which the head is preferably, but not necessarily, mounted, preferably, but not necessarily, reclaims injectate and transports it to the low-pressure side of the air booster pump. Filters exist for the injectate; a main injectate filter can preferably be replaced while the Machine is operating. And the Machine preferably includes a computer device for controlling its components and operation.

Bifidobacteria strains and mutants thereof having tolerance in the gastrointestinal environments and to a method for culturing the same. Strains of the invention include Bifidobacterium longum ATCC No.(s) 55815, 55816, 55817 and 55818. All of which have tolerances against bile salt, acid and oxygen and which have been obtained through mutagenesis and screening for tolerances against bile salt, acid and oxygen by using acid tolerant using acid-tolerant Bifidobacterium longum Y1 and Y2 strains (ATCC 55813 and 55814). These strains can be isolated from healthy infant feces as the parent strains. Further, an isolated Bifidobacterium mutant strain which grows aerobically, is ten times more tolerant to hydrochloric acid at a pH of 1.5 to 4.5 and is also tolerant to oxgall at 0.3% in a culture medium is disclosed. The strains show excellent growth under aerobic condition in the presence of skim milk without supplement of other growth promoting substances. The oxygen-tolerant property of the strains makes them useful for industrial production. In addition, food products containing the strains are also disclosed.

A method for surface treating animal tissue is provided by the invention. The method includes the steps of providing animal tissue having an average size of between about 0.5 inch and about 16 inches in length, introducing the animal tissue into a bath provided at a temperature of between about 80° C. and about 150° C. for between about 25 seconds and about 150 seconds, and recovering the animal tissue from the water bath. A pasteurization unit is provided for continuous processing of animal tissue.

A method for providing nutrition to critical care animals such as dogs and cats is provided which comprises administering an amount of an artificially produced canine or feline milk substitute composition. The canine milk substitute composition comprises, on a dry matter basis, from about 35 to 45% by weight protein, from about 25 to 35% by weight fat, and from about 10 to 25% by weight carbohydrates. The feline milk composition comprises, on a dry matter basis, from about 30 to 50% protein, from about 25 to 50% fat, and from about 10 to 25% carbohydrates.
