The present invention provides methods for reducing the level of free aldehydes in coatings for flexible substrates, such as tanned leather, and substantially aldehyde free substrates. The methods comprise applying to the substrate a composition of one or more aqueous emulsion or suspension composition of an acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer that is made from, or contains one or more lower alkyl alcohol or degrades on storage or in use to form such an alcohol, and one or more water-insoluble to slightly water soluble aldehyde scavenger compound, followed by drying or curing the applied composition to form a coating. In addition, the methods provide enhanced aldehyde scrubbing, especially for acetaldehyde, by applying to a substrate an aqueous acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer emulsion or suspension comprising a aldehyde scavenger compound that is substantially deprotonated, i.e. by raising the pH composition to 5.5 or higher. The present invention also provides treated and coated substrates made by the inventive methods.

In order to provide an economical process for applying a coating to at least one side, optionally to both sides, of a leather, in which gentle processing of the leather is ensured and hardening thereof is avoided, an aqueous plastic dispersion having compact particles containing a blowing agent being applied to this side or these sides and being allowed to solidify, and hollow microspheres being formed from the thermoplastic compact particles by supplying heat, the invention proposes that, after solidification, the plastic dispersion containing the compact particles is subjected to the action of expanded superheated steam at a temperature between 80° C. and 100° C. The surfaces/substrates can by typically leather, vinyl, finished wood, unfinished wood, and a host of others too numerous to mention. An example of one formula is illustrated with an ultra-violet light indicating dye for use as an indicator.

Process for coating flexible substrates which comprises applying a finishing polyurethane-polyurea elastomer coating to a release surface, applying an undercoat of a polyurethane-polyurea elastomer having a different composition than the finishing coating on the finishing coating and applying a flexible substrate to the undercoating.The polyurethane-polyurea elastomers used as the finishing coat are prepared by forming a polyether-polyol prepolymer in which the polyol consists essentially of a diol or a mixture of diols and which prepolymer is subsequently reacted with an aromatic diamine.The polyurethane-polyurea elastomers used to form the undercoat are obtained by reacting the aromatic diamine with a polyether-polyol prepolymer in which the polyol consists essentially of one having an hydroxyl functionality of at least 3 or a mixture of polyols in which at least one of the polyols has a hydroxy functionality greater than 2 in a sufficient amount to increase the resistance to flexing.The coated flexible substrates are useful in many areas as is known for polyurethane or polyurea coated substrates generally, but the coated flexible substrates, according to this invention, are particularly useful in the manufacture of shoe uppers.
