A machining device comprising five axial kinetic coordinate systems that can be controlled simultaneously, three axes of which, are linear moving axes and two axes of which are rotary axes, with one axis of the five axes being provided with a tool rotating function, whereby said machining device is equipped with a cutting tool 51 and a friction stir welding tool 52. The current value observed when a large-diameter portion of said tool 52 contacts the work object is set in advance, and by observing the torque current of the rotary shaft of the tool 52 during friction stir welding, the insertion depth of the tool 52 can be controlled by maintaining the observed torque current above the preset current value, thus providing a good weld. A single device can provide both the cutting and the welding. Thus, it is possible to reduce equipment cost, installation space, plant area, lead time and production cost.

The present invention provides an automatic tool changer which employs a servo motor as a drive source for a tool magazine and, yet, features a minimized power consumption and a reduced steady torque of the servo motor. The automatic tool changer is adapted to perform a tool magazine indexing operation in accordance with an indexing command and then perform a tool changing operation in accordance with a tool changing command. If the next indexing command is not outputted within a predetermined time period after completion of the tool changing operation, power supply to the servo motor for driving the tool magazine is temporarily stopped and, when the next indexing command is outputted, the power supply to the servo motor is resumed for performing the indexing operation. If the next tool changing command is not outputted within the predetermined time period after completion of the tool magazine indexing operation, the power supply to the servo motor is temporarily stopped and, when the next tool changing command is outputted, the power supply to the servo motor is resumed for performing the tool changing operation.

A vibration dampened spindle and tool holder assembly for a rotary cutting machine. The assembly includes a spindle and a tool holder retained therewith. The tool holder has an interfacing ledge with a top surface for abutment with a distal spindle surface, and a continuous channel disposed in a proximal portion of the top surface. A resilient dampening member, having a rectangular or a circular cross sectional configuration, resides in the channel for compressed abutment with the spindle surface. Because the dampening member is situated within the channel, the interfacing placement of the spindle surface and tool holder top surface meet as the dampening member is enshrouded in the channel by these abutting surfaces and thereby protected from contaminant entry during dampening action.
