    摘要: A device for venting gases from a cargo tank of a tanker ship when being filled with cargo, including a housing, an annular diaphragm of resilient material secured at its outer periphery to the housing and a spherical seat so positioned as to close the aperture in the diaphragm and deform the diaphragm to generally frusto-conical shape whereby the diaphragm is in forced engagement with the seat and a pressure is required in the tank to lift the diaphragm off the seat to vent gases. The diaphragm can pass over the equator of the seat when a negative pressure is created upon unloading so as to allow air into the tanks. The position of the seat member is adjustable in order to select the pressure at which the device starts to vent gases. Gases vented are formed by the device into a jet which is directed upwardly from the deck of the tanker ship.

    摘要: A vessel (14) that stores crude oil in tanks (12A-12H) in the vessel hull, maintains oxygen-free gas in the tank spaces (32) that lie above the crude oil. This is achieved by flowing in hydrocarbon-inert gas (gas that does not react with hydrocarbons), such as flue gas, when crude oil is removed so the crude oil level drops, and by flowing out vent gas that includes the inert gas and gaseous hydrocarbons that come from the crude oil, when crude oil flows into the tank and the oil level rises. An inert gas pipe (50) is used to flow inert flue gas into the tanks, and a separate vent gas pipe (52) is used to flow out the vent gas. A vacuum is applied to the vent pipe by connecting the vent pipe to an eductor (102) through which pressured gas, such as steam, is flowed. The vent gas is usually released into the atmosphere, but is burned when there is almost no wind, to prevent a buildup of hydrocarbon gas on the vessel deck.

    摘要: An improved method and apparatus for venting hydrocarbon gases from the cargo compartments of a tanker vessel for the transportation of oil in water, which tanker vessel includes a hull comprising a bottom and sides, a top deck, a plurality of watertight cargo compartments disposed in the hull between the top deck and the hull bottom for receiving the oil, and vent means coupled to each of the cargo compartments and communicative externally of the compartments for venting hydrocarbon gases to and from the cargo compartments and the atmosphere during loading, discharge and transfer of oil and ballast from the compartments. In an apparatus according to the invention, the improvement comprises valve means, coupled to and communicative with at least two of the cargo compartments and disposed at the top of the compartments, which interconnects the two cargo compartments for venting hydrocarbon gases from one of the two compartments to the other of the compartments after discharge of oil from the one of the compartments. In a method according to the invention, the valve means coupled to one of the cargo compartments from which oil is to be discharged is opened subsequent to discharging oil from the compartment so as to operatively interconnect the compartment with another, empty compartment in the tanker vessel. The vent means of both compartments are then closed so as to render the compartments non-communicative to the atmosphere. The emptied cargo compartment is then filled with a liquid so as to expel the hydrocarbon gases from the compartment and vent the gases to the other of the cargo compartments through the valve means.

    摘要: To prevent a ship having closed cargo tanks from being damaged, during loading and unloading under closed conditions, by reason of the occurrence of excessive vacuum conditions in such a tank, each tank has a vacuum relief valve which opens automatically when the pressure within the tank falls very slightly below the external ambient atmospheric pressure and which has an effective valve aperture sufficient to permit the ingress of air into the cargo tank at a velocity below 200 ft/sec. when the tank is being emptied at a maximum rate. Means is also provided for shutting off communication between the valve and the ambient atmosphere through the vacuum relief valve during a voyage. The vacuum relief valve may conveniently be provided in a common casing with breather valves and a constant-velocity blow-off valve.
