An unloading system comprises an upper-opening chamber for receiving airplane-derived refuse; a chute; a chute-connected safety gate which is settable in falling preventing relation with respect to an access door of an airplane from which the refuse is unloadable into the chute and to the chamber; and an air brake assembly for immobilizing the safety gate when the chute ceases to be vertically displaced. A compacting system comprises a main platen mount with an occluding surface for occluding the opening; an auxiliary platen mount for movably supporting the main platen mount; a holder assembly underneath the auxiliary platen mount; and force transmitting elements always retained within a compaction chamber interior. The main platen mount is linearly driven between a first position completely forwardly of the opening and a second position at which the opening is completely occluded, and is additionally driven to discharge the received refuse. Methods are also disclosed.

A multi-compartment, sweeper-type rear loading refuse packer, with a compaction unit pivotally connected to the body. In the loading position of the compaction unit, the collection sumps at the back of the body are situated for receiving a respective load of segregated refuse deposited over a rear loading ledge at the back of each sump. At least one divider wall extends between respective two adjacent sumps from the rear loading ledge to the ceilings of the respective two adjacent compartments at the compartment openings, thereby defining respective loading channels from the sumps to the compartments. Each divider wall has a back portion with a top edge extending forward along adjacent sumps and a front portion with a top edge that rises obliquely from the top edge of the back portion to the ceilings of the respective two adjacent compartments at the compartment openings. The pack blade covers the channels and is drivable toward and away from the ceiling on an obliquely linear path along the top edge of the front portion of the walls, between a bottom limit position and a top limit position. The pack blade remains a part of the compaction unit when the compaction unit is pivoted upwardly into the discharge position.

An elongated container of a truck has a closed front end wall and a hinged rear outlet closure, and a side infeed opening for receiving garbage. This empty container is configured to receive an elongated base upon which is mounted a reciprocating conveyor floor for moving garbage in the container outward through the opened rear closure for deposit at a garbage disposal site. The power drive mechanism for driving the reciprocating floor is located at the front end of the container and is shielded from input garbage by a deflector secured to the reciprocating floor. The deflector also serves as a pusher for compacting and moving garbage in the container out through the opened rear closure. The self-contained reciprocating floor is easily carried manually and fed through the opened rear closure and secured firmly in the truck container.

The storage compartment also has a forward end that opens into the hopper compartment, a rear end having a tailgate mounted thereon, and a storage compartment floor at a second level. The second level is raised above, or at an elevation higher than, the first level. The refuse collection vehicle body also includes a transition floor between the hopper compartment floor at the first level and the storage compartment floor at the second level, and a crusher panel that is adapted to apply a downwardly directed compressive force to refuse material in the hopper compartment and to sweep said refuse material from the hopper compartment into the storage compartment. The vehicle body also includes means for removing refuse material from the storage compartment.

A hollow refuse storage body having a longitudinal axis is configured for mounting on a truck chassis. The body has a forward hopper section and a rear section with an open rear end. A tailgate is mounted to the rear section of the refuse storage body and is moveable between closed and open positions to seal and unseal the open rear end of the rear section of the refuse storage body. A hollow box-like load eject blade is mounted within the refuse storage body for reciprocating movement along the longitudinal axis along a bottom floor of the refuse storage body. A hollow box-like packer blade is mounted within the refuse storage body for reciprocating movement along the longitudinal axis overlapping an upper surface of the eject blade. A pair of single stage hydraulic cylinders are coupled in criss-cross fashion between the refuse storage body and the packer blade for moving the packer blade over a first range of travel. The packer blade is moved rearwardly and forwardly in the hopper section and underneath a divider wall of the refuse storage body which prevents spring back of refuse. This permits the packer blade to repetitively push refuse periodically dumped into the hopper section of the refuse storage body and compact the refuse into the rear section of the refuse storage body. A multi-stage hydraulic cylinder is coupled between the refuse storage body and the eject blade for moving the eject blade over a second much greater range of travel. This permits the eject blade to push trash that has been compacted in the rear section of the refuse storage body by the packer blade out the open rear end of the rear section of the refuse storage body when the tailgate has been moved to its open position.

An improved compacting system, and an automated refuse vehicle that can employ this compacting system. Alternatively, the compacting system can be used with a stationary packer. The compacting system is capable of placing the packer ram, blade or panel into a creep mode in which, even if the maximum compacting force is applied, the packing ram will generally retain its position without reversing direction for a pre-programmed interval of time. The refuse vehicle also provides a fast-return cycle for an engaged container, and a series of "lock-out" zones to minimize the possibility of damaging the vehicle during automated use. Methods for using the compacting system and for operating the refuse vehicle also form part of the present invention.

A loading device may be used to load refuse or recyclables from the front or side of the vehicle into the charging hopper. A packing and ejecting device may be mounted within the charging hopper without reducing the holding capacity of the charging hopper. The packing and ejecting device includes a substantially hollow cylinder carrier interconnecting crossed pairs of packing cylinders and ejecting cylinders, wherein the extension of the packing cylinders, with the ejecting cylinders retracted, linearly displaces the packer panel and cylinder carrier through a first longitudinal portion of the storage body and extension of both the ejecting cylinders and the packing cylinders, displaces the packer panel through the entirety of the storage body and where the fully retracted cylinders store within a hollow portion of the cylinder carrier.
