Process for preparing magnesium nitrate hexahydrate without the need for filtering aids. A process for preparing magnesium nitrate hexahydrate essentially comprises: (a) forming a magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate suspension in melted magnesium nitrate hexahydrate at a suspension temperature in excess of 90.degree. C.; (b) adding a nitric acid solution to the suspension while stirring thereby forming a reaction mixture containing additional magnesium nitrate hexahydrate; (c) filtering the liquid reaction mixture to obtain a clear magnesium nitrate hexahydrate filtrate; (d) discharging as product a part, corresponding to the amount of magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate introduced, of the liquid magnesium nitrate hexahydrate obtained as clear filtrate; (e) utilizing the remaining part as liquid medium for the conversion of magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate with nitric acid. Thermally stabilized ammonium nitrate containing granules may also be prepared containing magnesium nitrate hexahydrate according to the above process.

An improved beta(β)-spodumene (˜LiAlSi2O6) nitric acid conversion process produces discrete lithium (Li), aluminum (Al) and silica (SiO2) materials by: (i) converting lithium nitrate, LiNO3, to lithium carbonate, Li2CO3; (ii) creating a Al-rich precipitate either by thermally decomposing aluminum nitrate, Al(NO3)3, or by reacting Al(NO3)3 with aqueous and/or solid ammonium carbonate, (NH4)2CO3; and (iii) forming a solid SiO2-rich aluminosilicate residue by selectively leaching Li and Al from β-spodumene. Three key reactants consumed during processing—nitric acid (HNO3), ammonia (NH3), and magnesium oxide (MgO)—may be regenerated internally by closed-loop chemical cycles, this feature of the process greatly improving its economics in commercial applications.

A continuous process for the manufacture of a metal salt solution is described which provides more economical products with higher quality than current processes. The process is safer, both to operating personnel and to the environment, than currently used processes. The process comprises feeding an aqueous metal compound slurry, e.g., a metal oxide/hydroxide slurry and a mineral acid, e.g., nitric acid, and water to a reactor which includes a zone of extreme mixing and agitation, most preferably a cross-pipe reactor provided with an optional static in-line mixer. A cross-pipe reactor provides complete and efficient reaction by providing greater surface area, high agitation and a long reaction time.

The addition of an excess of asbestos tailings in the course of the extraction of magnesium from asbestos tailings by digestion with an acid greatly facilitates the elimination of silica and other impurities by filtration of the resulting reaction mixture. The improvement reduces the filtration time and the filtration leaves a cake which is much easier to dispose.

A novel magnesium hydroxide of the formula Mg(OH).sub.2 having (i) a strain in the direction of not more than 3.0 .times. 10.sup.-3, (ii) a crystallite size in the direction of more than 800 A, and (iii) a specific surface area of less than 20 m.sup.2 /g. The magnesium hydroxide, if desired as coated with anionic surfactants, is useful, for example, as fire retardants for thermoplastic synthetic resins and aqueous paints. The novel magnesium hydroxide is prepared by heating in an aqueous medium at an elevated pressure a novel basic magnesium chloride or nitrate of this invention expressed by the formula Mg(OH).sub.2-x A.sub.x .sup.. mH.sub.2 O wherein A is Cl or NO.sub.3, x is a number of more than 0 but less than 0.2, and m is a number of 0 to 6.
