A method and apparatus to remove acid gases from a flue gas containing sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. There is a heat exchanger to reduce incoming flue gas temperatures. Gas from the heat exchanger are oxidized to their higher oxidation state. A reaction tower receives the oxidized gases. The reaction tower includes a reaction surface. There is a first inlet for gases adjacent the base of the reaction tower and a second inlet for a basic compound in the reaction tower above the first inlet. The arrangement allows counter current flows of the gas and the basic compound to enable scrubbing of the gas. There is an outlet for scrubbed gas and an outlet for liquids at the tower base.

A process for the fixation of nitrogen comprising, combining a gaseous nitrogen and oxygen at a total temperature of about 100 atmospheres with a solid oxide which can produce a nitrate, in the presence of a catalyst for the acceleration of a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen to produce nitrogen oxides, initially heating the combination of a temperature of between 600.degree. C. to 800.degree. C. and below the dissociation pressure of the nitrate to start an exothermic reaction for producing nitrogen oxides from the nitrogen and oxygen and for producing nitrate from the solid oxide and to establish an equilibrium between the nitrogen, oxygen, nitrogen oxides, solid oxide and nitrate. The reacting combination in equilibrium is then cooled and either the nitrate or the nitrogen oxides are removed from the reaction as products.

A method for complex treatment of phosphogypsum comprising crushing of phosphogypsum and its washing with a solution of sulphuric acid, concentration 2-15%, and stirring at 50-80° C., wherein the resultant mixture is separated into a liquid fraction and a sediment containing mostly calcium sulphate, which is characterized in that metals are precipitated from the liquid fraction, mainly lanthanides, phosphates and sulphates of metals soluble in diluted sulphuric acid, and the sediment containing mostly calcium sulphate is converted in the presence of ammonia liquor and carbon dioxide to ammonium sulphate and calcium carbonate, wherein filtered and dried sediment of calcium carbonate is dissolved in a 15-30% solution of nitric acid while stirring continuously, and then the resultant CO2 is recirculated and used in the conversion of the first phase of the sediment, and the resultant mixture is separated into a solution of calcium nitrate with dissolved metals and a sediment of fluorides and silicates with metal precipitate.

An igniter ignites the gas mixture in the intake chamber to facilitate a reaction at a high temperature and high pressure. A nozzle restricts exit of the ignited gas mixture from the combustion chamber. An expansion chamber cools the ignited gas. The expansion chamber has an exhaust where the cooled gas exits the expansion chamber. A chemical compound product is formed in the expansion chamber.
