A multi-stage process for isomerizing olefin compounds to the corresponding product olefin compounds is provided. The isomerization catalyst comprises an oxygen treated mixture of an alkali metal on a calcined support. The multi-stage process is particularly useful for isomerizing 5-vinyl-2-norbornene to 5-ethylidiene-2-norbornene. The catalyst is very active and highly selective and resistent to catalyst poisons. The process contacts the catalyst with an isomerizable olefin in at least two reaction stages to yield the corresponding product olefin compound. The reaction stages differ in temperature, catalyst activity or both.

5-ISOPROPYLIDENE-2-NORBORNENE IS PRODUCED BY SUBJECTING CYCLOPENTADIENE AND 2-METHYL-3-BUTENE-2-OL TO DIELSALDER REACTION TO OBTAIN A,A-DIMETHYL-5-NORBORNENE-2METHANOL (A MIXTURE OF ENDO-FORM AND EXO-FORM), DEHYDRATING THE A,A-DIMETHYL-5-NORBORNENE-2-METHANOL TO FORM A MIXTURE OF ENDO- AND EXO-5-ISOPROPENYL-2-NORBORNENE MIXTURE CONTAINING, IN PART, 5-ISOPROPYLIDENE-2-NORBORNENE, AND CONTACTING THE MIXTURE WITH AN ALKALINE CATALYST. THE 5-ISOPROPYLIDENE-2-NORBORNEN IS USEFUL AS A TERMONOMER OF A SO-CALLED ETHYLENE-PROPYLENE TERPOLYMER RUBBER, AND THE INCORPORATION THEREOF RESULTS IN A TERPOLYMER HAVING EXCELLENT CURING CHARACTERISTICS.

A process for producing 5-vinyl-2-norbornene which comprises the steps of subjecting a liquid raw material in which tetrahydroindene/dicyclopentadiene ratio (by weight) falls within the range of from 5/100 to 80/100 to a thermal decomposition in liquid phase in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling point of from 250.degree. C. to 300.degree. C. at a reaction temperature of not lower than 200.degree. C. and lower than 240.degree. C. for a reaction time of from 10 minutes to 120 minutes to obtain a liquid reaction mixture (A-1) composed of 50% to 70% by weight of cyclopentadiene, distilling the liquid reaction mixture (A-1) to obtain fraction (B-1) composed of 90% to 100% by weight of cyclopentadiene and fraction (B-2) composed of 60% to 90% by weight of the total of dicyclopentadiene and tetrahydroindene, further distilling the fraction (B-2) to obtain fraction (B-3) composed of 15% to 40% by weight of dicyclopentadiene and fraction (B-4) composed of 60% to 100% by weight of tetrahydroindene, recycling the fraction (B-3) into the liquid raw material, removing the fraction (B-4) out of the system, and subjecting the fraction (B-1) to a Diels Alder reaction with butadiene to obtain a liquid reaction mixture (C-1) composed of 20% to 40% by weight of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene.

A process is disclosed for the preparation of 5alkylidenenorbornene-2 for use as an important component of EPDM rubber. This product is obtained by the isomerization of 5alkenylnorbornene-2 which is accelerated by the catalytic action of certain complexes. These complexes are formed by combining organic alkalimetal compounds with alkylene diamines.
摘要:
A process is disclosed for the preparation of 5alkylidenenorbornene-2 for use as an important component of EPDM rubber. This product is obtained by the isomerization of 5alkenylnorbornene-2 which is carried out in the presence of a composite catalyst having increased activity and tending to suppress the formation of undesirable side products. The composite catalyst is essentially comprised of a cyclopentadienyl cobalt compound, an organometallic compound and an activating agent, and has been found peculiarly effective in the isomerization reaction.
