This disclosure relates to compositions and methods for converting biomass to various chemical intermediates and final products including fuels. Aspects include the depolymerization of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose to a wide slate of depolymerization compounds that can be subsequently metabolized by genetically modified bacterium, and converted to cis,cis-muconic acid. Other aspects include the use of monometallic catalysts for converting the cis,cis-muconic acid to commodity chemicals and fuels, for example adipic acid and/or nylon.

Substituted and unsubstituted phenols, catechols and orthobenzoquinones are converted to muconic acid mononitriles by reaction with copper(II)-ammonia reagents. The copper(II)-ammonia reagents can be prepared by the reaction of cuprous chloride with oxygen or air in liquid ammonia or in ammonium hydroxide or in pyridine followed by addition of ammonia or ammonium hydroxide. The muconic acid mononitriles are useful as monomers or comonomers and as intermediates in the manufacture of substituted and unsubstituted 6-aminocaproic acids, caprolactams and polyamides.

This invention provides a process for producing nylon 6,6 salt which involves bioconversion of toluene to muconic acid in the presence of hexamethylenediamine to yield hexamethylenediamine muconate salt. Hydrogenation of this salt provides an aqueous solution of the desired hexamethylenediamine adipate salt.

Process for the preparation of trans, trans-muconic acid by reacting a glyoxalacetal with ketene in the presence of an acid catalyst and hydrolyzing the .beta., .beta.'-dialkoxy-adipic acid-alkylester formed with alkali. By this new process trans, trans-muconic acid is easily obtained in better yield, which compound is an important intermediate for the production of 1,4-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid esters.

This invention provides hexamethylenediamine muconate salt. This novel salt can be produced by bioconversion of toluene to muconic acid in the presence of hexamethylenediamine. Hydrogenation of this salt provides hexamethylenediamine adipate salt.
