    摘要: A method and apparatus for the thermal aging of catalytic converters uses a gas dynamic exhaust gas generator for generating heated exhaust gas for the thermal aging process. The gas generator includes a gas dynamic air compressor, an exhaust gas turbine driving the compressor and a combustor or burner receiving compressed air from the compressor, for burning fuel to form heated combustion products, delivered as heated compressed exhaust gas to the turbine for driving the compressor. In a preferred embodiment, the cost of the converter aging apparatus is reduced by using a commercially available engine exhaust turbocharger to provide the compressor and turbine. A combustor is connected between the compressor and turbine and the desired fuel and air connections, controls and an exhaust conduit are provided to complete the apparatus. The turbocharger may be sized for aging one or a plurality of catalytic converters at the same time.

    摘要: An exhaust system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine has at least two exhaust valves per cylinder. A first exhaust valve in each cylinder is connected to a first catalyst, and a second exhaust valve in each cylinder is connected to a second catalyst which opens out upstream of the first catalyst. The first exhaust valves or their outlets are kept closed during a starting phase of the engine, so that, during the starting phase, all the exhaust gases first pass through the second catalyst which is smaller than the first catalyst and is positioned closer than the latter to the engine.

    摘要: A method of controlling an exhaust gas aftertreatment system in a compression ignition engine having a power-assisted turbocharger coupled to a power source. The turbocharger includes a compressor in communication with an intake manifold and a turbine in communication with an exhaust manifold. The method comprises the steps of determining an operating mode of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system selected from the group consisting of a light off mode, regeneration mode, and storage mode. The method then determines a charge value associated with the power source, and engages the power source to the power-assisted turbocharger as a function of the charge value and the operating mode of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system. In one aspect of the invention, negative power is applied to the power-assisted turbocharger to increase the exhaust gas temperature to achieve particulate filter light-off. In another aspect, positive power is applied to the power-assisted turbocharger to reduce turbo-lag or engine pumping losses. In another aspect, negative or positive power is applied to the power-assisted turbocharger to maintain a desired oxygen flow through the particulate filter.

    摘要: A system for assisting the regeneration of a particle filter integrated into an exhaust line of an engine that admits air into the engine and includes a valved return that selectively closes a path that recycles exhaust gas from the engine to the engine inlet. An additive is added to fuel, the additive deposited onto the particle filter to lower the combustion temperature of the particles trapped in the filter. A control system monitors the regeneration system and triggers a regeneration phase of the particle filter by combustion of the particles trapped in the engine, at the same time initiating a phase of multiple injections of fuel into the cylinders of the engine during their expansion phase. The control system further closes the recycling path during a regeneration phase of the particle filter to enable the monitoring of the composition of the gases at the inlet of the particle filter.
