The Inventor invented a combustion control device which optimizes combustion regardless of the cetane number of a fuel of an internal combustion engine (1) by focusing on the correlation between the cetane number and specific gravity of the fuel, and correcting combustion control based on the specific gravity of the fuel. The combustion control device comprises a sensor (7, 32, 36, 37) which detects the specific gravity of the fuel, a device which adjusts a combustion-related element of the internal combustion engine (1) such as fuel injection, compression end in-cylinder temperature and an intake air swirl (15, 19, 27, 51), and a controller (21) programmed to correct a target value of the element based on the specific gravity of the fuel (S414, S424, S430), and control the adjusting device so that the corrected target value is realized (S415, S425, S430).

A device for preventing the turbo-charger from over-running, wherein an actuator is arranged in a by-pass bypassing a turbine of the turbo-charger and operates a waste gate valve. The actuator has a positive pressure chamber communicated, via a boost pipe, with an intake air passage downstream of a compressor and a negative pressure chamber communicated with a source of negative pressure via a negative pressure pipe. The negative pressure chamber is so constituted as to be supplied with a negative pressure to have a target pressure that is set relative to the atmospheric pressure.

A high-pressure ratio turbocharger of this invention has a two-stage compressor section comprising a first-stage compressor impeller rotatably disposed in a first compressor housing, and a second-stage compressor impeller rotatably disposed in a second compressor housing. The first and second stage compressor impellers are attached to a common shaft, and are positioned within respective compressor housing in a direction facing away from one another. A portion of the second compressor housing is formed from a compressor backplate attached to a turbocharger center housing. A scroll seal is disposed between the first and second compressor housings, and is interposed between the impellers to separate outlet air flow between each respective first and second compressor chamber.

A compact, motor-assisted, exhaust-driven turbocharger system is operable to increase the air flow or pressure to an internal combustion engine to reduce engine emissions. The turbocharger system includes a shaft, a expander connected to the shaft and connectable to an exhaust to the engine, and a compressor connected to the shaft and connectable to an air intake of the engine. An electric motor is attachable to the shaft and a controller is connected to electric motor to selectively increase the rotational speed of the exhaust-driven shaft to optimize the air flow or pressure to the engine in response to exhaust emissions, for example, smoke and soot, from the engine or in response to high speed operation of the engine.

A system for estimating engine exhaust pressure includes a pressure sensor fluidly coupled to an intake manifold of the engine, a turbocharger having a turbine fluidly coupled to an exhaust manifold of the engine, a control actuator responsive to a control command to control either of a swallowing capacity and a swallowing efficiency of the turbine, and a control computer estimating engine exhaust pressure as a function of the pressure signal and the control command. In an alternate embodiment, the system includes an engine speed sensor, an EGR valve fluidly connected between the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold, and an EGR valve position sensor. The control computer is operable in this embodiment to estimate engine exhaust pressure as a function of the pressure signal, the control command, the engine speed signal and the EGR valve position signal.

An exhaust-gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine has a turbine in the exhaust-gas tract and a compressor, driven by the turbine, in the intake tract, the turbine having a flow channel with a radial flow-inlet cross-section and a semi-axial flow-inlet cross-section, and a flow ring being provided which limits the two flow-inlet cross-sections. The turbine is furnished with variable turbine geometry for the changeable adjustment of the flow-inlet cross-section. To improve efficiency, the position of the flow ring in the housing of the exhaust-gas turbocharger is variably adjustable.

Abstract of DisclosureMethod and arrangement for regulating the rotational speed of a crankshaft included in an internal combustion engine during a gear changing process of a gearbox connected to the internal combustion engine. The arrangement includes a compressor mounted in connection with the air inlet of the internal combustion engine. A transmission having a variable gear ratio is located between the crankshaft and a driving shaft arranged in connection with the compressor, and a control means is arranged to control the gear ratio between the crankshaft and the compressor. When changing from a higher to lower gear, the control means is arranged to control the gear ratio between crankshaft and compressor so that the gear ratio between these components is reduced, and wherein moment of inertia is transferred from compressor to crankshaft resulting in an acceleration of the crankshaft.

In an internal-combustion engine having an exhaust-gas driven supercharger (8) and having at least two exhaust-gas valves (2, 3) per cylinder, a first exhaust-gas valve (2) in each cylinder is connected to a first exhaust manifold (4), whilst a second exhaust-gas valve (3) in each cylinder is connected to a second exhaust manifold (5). The two exhaust manifolds (4, 5) lead to at least one exhaust-gas turbine in at least one turbo compressor and the first exhaust-gas valves (2) are arranged to be opened at all engine speeds, whilst the second exhaust-gas valves (3) are arranged to be opened only at higher engine speeds. The first exhaust manifold (4) has a smaller flow area than the second exhaust manifold (5). By choosing which exhaust-gas valves are to be used, the size of the flow ducts between engine and exhaust-gas turbine can easily be suited to the size of the exhaust-gas flow which is available at the time.
