摘要： A laser spark distribution and ignition system that reduces the high power optical requirements for use in a laser ignition and distribution system allowing for the use of optical fibers for delivering the low peak energy pumping pulses to a laser amplifier or laser oscillator. An optical distributor distributes and delivers optical pumping energy from an optical pumping source to multiple combustion chambers incorporating laser oscillators or laser amplifiers for inducing a laser spark within a combustion chamber. The optical distributor preferably includes a single rotating mirror or lens which deflects the optical pumping energy from the axis of rotation and into a plurality of distinct optical fibers each connected to a respective laser media or amplifier coupled to an associated combustion chamber. The laser spark generators preferably produce a high peak power laser spark, from a single low power pulse. The laser spark distribution and ignition system has application in natural gas fueled reciprocating engines, turbine combustors, explosives and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy diagnostic sensors.

摘要： An improved breaker point actuating apparatus for producing electrical impulses in timed relation to the operational cycle of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a conventional rolling bearing fixed to a distributor drive shaft on an axis eccentric from the rotational axis of the distributor drive shaft. The bearing includes an outer race freely rotatable with rspect to an inner race which in turn is fixed to the distributor drive shaft. An exterior annular surface of the outer race is utilized to engage a wiper associated with a set of contact points. As the distributor drive shaft is rotated, the exterior surface wobbles due to the eccentric bearing axis and is radially reciprocated against the wiper, thereby opening and closing the associated point contacts. Since the outer race is freely rotatable on the inner race, frictional contact between the exterior surface of the outer race and the wiper serves to hold the outer race substantially stationary and thereby substantially reduces frictional wear between the surface and the wiper.

摘要： A distributor in an internal combustion engine includes a distributor plate mounted in the distributor and having a first insulated separable electrical coupling connected to the hot line and a separable mechanical positioning coupling. A replaceable module includes a breaker plate having a second electrical coupling and a second mechanical coupling which separably engage the first electrical coupling and first mechanical coupling with the application of the module to the distributor plate. Mounted on the breaker plate are a breaker arm connected to the second electrical contact, a stationary point, a condensor connected between the breaker arm and stationary point and a timing lamp connected through a switch between the breaker arm and stationary point. The distributor plate may be angularly adjustable on an underplate mounted on the distributor. The module may be vertically coupled to the distributor plate, or it may be slideably coupled thereto and provided with a timing cam sensing template.

摘要： A method of assembling an ignition distributor including the steps of engaging an annular timing plate with an annular base plate so that the timing plate is capable of angular movement with respect to the base plate. Three ears formed on the base plate overlie the timing plate, and the timing plate is rotated relative to the base plate, so that three ramps provided on the timing plate engage the ears respectively. As the timing plate is rotated the ramps bend the ears away from the timing plate, so that a clearance exists between the ears and the timing plate which is substantially equal to the heights of the highest part of the ramps above the surface of the timing plate. Thus the timing plate will be capable of a predetermined degree of axial movement relative to the base plate.

摘要： An ignition system for an internal combustion engine has circularly arranged stationary brushes and one or more insulated contacts rotating with the distributor shaft which replace the make-and-break contacts of an ordinary engine ignition system. The brushes and rotating contacts are adaptable to be mounted in the ordinary distributor housing. A single contact on the distributor shaft provides one ignition spark in each power stroke of a piston and more than one contact provides a corresponding number of sparks in each power stroke.
