A first tooth is positioned to be detected before the piston reaches its top dead center when the rotor rotates in a forward direction and a second tooth is positioned to be detected before the piston reaches its top dead center when the rotor rotates in a reverse direction.

A detection system and method for determining the phase relationship between a crankshaft and one or more independently phase shiftable camshafts which the system integrates into camshaft and cylinder identification sensors for determining both cam location for variable cam phasing, and for generating a cylinder identification signal uniquely identifying one of the cylinders, for sequential fuel injection, thus reducing: (i) the number of sensors needed to operate the system to a single crankshaft sensor and a single sensor for each camshaft; and (ii) the number of high-speed inputs needed on the on-board engine control unit microprocessor. The number of sensing teeth on the independent cam wheels vary depending upon the number of cylinders and the number of independently phase shiftable camshafts in the engine. Each sensing tooth is associated with one of the engine's cylinders and one cam wheel contains an extra cylinder identification tooth associated with a selected cylinder.

A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a reference position sensor which generates a reference position signal indicating occurrence of a first and a second reference position of each piston of an engine. Using the reference position signal, the period between two occurrences of one of the reference position and the separation between an occurrence of the first reference position and an occurrence of the second reference position are measured. An error in the reference position signal with respect to the first or the second reference position is calculated based on a ratio of the reference position separation to the measured period. A control timing for the engine, such as the ignition timing, is calculated based on operating conditions of the engine, and a control period corresponding to the length of time from an occurrence of one of the reference positions until an occurrence of the control timing is calculated based on the calculated error. The calculation of the control period compensates for the presence of error in the reference position signal, so the engine timing can be accurately controlled despite the presence of error.

A method for firing a spark plug in an engine which employs a simulated high data rate signal. The simulated high data rate signal is generated by a preselected number of gaps in a flywheel within a predetermined time segment of each cylinder event time called the spark event. A sensor generates the simulated high data rate signal as the gaps rotate past it. Data pulses are generated and stored within the spark event. In the case of distributorless ignition systems, the spark plug to be fired is identified. In one embodiment, a widened gap in the flywheel is used to perform this identification. The occurrence time of the leaading and trailing edges of the data pulses are received and stored. The rate of rotation including velocity and possibly acceleration is calculated and stored upon the occurence of each pulse. The spark firing time within the spark event is calculated and stored upon the occurrence of each pulse. Finally, the spark plug is fired once within the spark event.

An inexpensive and reliable tool accurately orients pick-up core assembly and checks the bushing runout in an electronic ignition unit for automobile. The tool includes a T-shaped member having a precisely formed centering and locating shaft of a precise length in combination with an integral core locating plate radially projecting from the locating shaft. The length of the pin or shaft is selected to precisely locate the core locating plate. The electronic ignition unit includes a magnetic trigger unit having a trigger coil mounted within a distributor. An annular magnetic core has pyramidal trigger elements and the rotor has closely spaced opposed pyramidal trigger elements. Accurate, precise location of the pyramidal elements and the sharp opposed edges are critical to proper ignition. The tool has the shaft located within the rotor bushing and precisely locates the locating plate, which precisely locates the core in precise concentric aligned orientation to the rotor axis. The tool may be formed for one ignition module unit with the locating plate formed having a precisely formed annular face which is precisely parallel and concentrix with the periphery of the locating pin. Alternatively, the locating plate is formed with a chamfered edge face, with the chamfer precisely located and constructed to provide alternate annular surfaces for different ignition module units.
