摘要: A differential assembly including a rotatable casing having an axis of rotation, a selectively energized electromagnet proximal the casing, and a rotatable first clutch disposed within the casing, the first clutch placed in operative engagement with the casing in response to the electromagnet being energized. Relative rotation between the first clutch and the casing is slowed by their being in operative engagement. A rotatable clutch hub and a second clutch are disposed within the casing, and the casing and the clutch hub are rotatably coupled through engagement of the second clutch, which is operatively engaged in response to relative rotation between the first clutch and the casing being slowed. At least one rotatable pinion gear is disposed within the casing and revolves about the axis of rotation. At least one side gear engaged with the pinion gear and rotatable about the axis of rotation is disposed within the casing, and is rotatably coupled to the casing through the second clutch during engagement of the second clutch. Neither of the first clutch and the second clutch is appreciably engaged with the casing in response to gear separating forces exerted between the pinion gear and the side gear.

摘要: An articulated four wheel drive work vehicle is provided with a front axle having a front differential and a rear axle having a rear differential. Both differentials are provided with hydraulically operated differential locks that are coupled to respective solenoid control valves. The solenoid control valves are coupled to a microprocessor. The microprocessor has a manual mode in which the differential locks are controlled by a foot pedal in the operators cab and an automatic mode in which the microprocessor controls the differential locks in response to speed signals from the axles and the transmission. The microprocessor calculates a predicted axle speed based on the transmission output speed signal received by a transmission speed sensor. The microprocessor then compares this signal to the actual axle speed signals received from axle speed sensors and triggers the respective solenoid valve if the difference is greater than a programmed amount. An articulation angle sensor sends an articulation angle signal to the microprocessor. If the articulation is greater than a programmed amount the solenoid locks are released.

摘要: A constant output transmission apparatus operable to transform a variable RPM input to an input shaft member through the use of double planetary gear set means and the use of a low range gear and clutch assembly and a high range gear and clutch assembly to transfer output through a ring gear and carrier assembly and an output ring gear assembly to an output shaft assembly to provide a constant RPM output to an output shaft member. The variable input to the input shaft member is constantly causing rotation of an input carrier plate assembly driving input planet gear members and, concurrently, driving an input drive gear assembly. The input gear drive assembly is operable to concurrently drive a low range gear and clutch assembly and a high range gear and clutch assembly. On activation of a respective low range clutch piston or a high range clutch piston, this operates to selectively operate and rotate a respective low range clutch assembly and a high range clutch assembly. This operates through the rotating input planet gear members and output planet gear members to rotate the output ring gear assembly and the ring gear and carrier assembly to provide the constant output to the output shaft member. A second embodiment of a constant output transmission assembly uses a single planetary gear set means, a single viscous clutch means, and one output ring gear assembly to achieve the constant RPM output.

摘要: A light-weight transfer case is provided for implementation with a four-wheel drive vehicle. The light-weight transfer case includes a single-piece housing formed through either a lost-foam magnesium or die cast process. First and second output shafts are included which are formed from single-piece tubing through either a hydro-forming or swaging process. The first and second output shafts are lighter weight and maintain increased strength over traditional transfer case output shafts. A gear reduction unit is also included for establishing high, low and neutral speeds of the first and second output shafts. Furthermore, a mode selection device is included for selectively providing drive to either a single output shaft, in a two-wheel drive mode, or both the first and second output shafts, in a four-wheel drive mode.

摘要: A control for a differential for controlling the relative rotation of a pair of axles extended from the differential to a front or rear pair of wheels. An indicator shaft is coupled to the axles, e.g., through a planetary gear arrangement (the indicator shaft being the sun gear) whereby when the axles rotate in unison the ring gear and planet gear set of the planetary gear arrangement are synchronized to not drive the sun gear/indicator shaft. When one axle rotates at a rate different than the other, the sun gear is rotated. A brake mechanism is coupled to the sun gear. A sensor senses the rotational rate as well as the acceleration of the sun gear. A controller is provided to control the braking of the sun gear. Braking of the sun gear will force the axles to rotate in unison.

摘要: Limited slip motor vehicle differential assemblies having a suitable high-shear strength, non-hardening, material which selectively resists slip or differentiation between the axle shafts and the differential housing, between the differential side gears and the differential housing, and/or between the differential side gears and the differential pinion gears when slip or differentiation occurs between two motor vehicle wheels mounted on the same axle. Such an arrangement provides some level of torque to each motor vehicle wheel at all times. The amount of resistance to slip or differentiation between the two motor vehicle wheels can be adjusted as desired by selecting an appropriate high-shear strength, non-hardening, material to provide the desired level of resistance to slip or differentiation between the two motor vehicle wheels in the motor vehicle differential assembly.
