The present invention features procedures for correcting discoloration and brightness variations due to liquid crystal cell gap variations or other optical, electro-optical, ambient light, electronic, mechanical, and materials anomalies arising in tiled, flat-panel displays. The purpose of these corrections is to achieve a visually seamless appearance. Absolute, relative and/or smoothing corrections are implemented by performing pixel data video processing with correction data acquired from memory. Techniques for determining and applying these corrections are described.

A stacked liquid cell, such as a stacked liquid crystal cell, comprises a stack of liquid layers and substrate layers between which the liquid layers are dispersed. The stack comprises a liquid and polymeric substrate layers made from a stratified-phase-separated composite. Being part of a stratified-phase-separated composite, in particular one manufactured in accordance with a single-substrate method, the polymeric layer may have a relative small thickness compared a conventional substrate layer which results in a stacked liquid cell having a reduced thickness or, more particular, a stacked liquid cell having a reduced thickness between subjacent liquid layers giving a reduction in parallax effects. A method of manufacturing a liquid cell involves stratifying, on a substrate, a layer of stratified-phase-separable composition into a liquid layer and a polymeric layer to form a stratified-phase-separated composite, the polymeric layer serving as one of the substrate of the liquid cell.

The present invention provides a high brightness color selective light modulator (CSLM) formed by apolarization modulator positioned between two retarder stacks. The modulator changes the apparent orientation of one retarder stack relative to the other so that, in a first switching state of the modulator the two retarder stacks cooperate in filtering the spectrum of input light, and in a second switching state the two retarder stacks complement each other, yielding a neutral transmission spectrum. Two or more CSLM stages can be used in series, each stage providing independent control of a primary color. One preferred embodiment eliminates internal polarizers between CSLM stages, thereby providing an additive common-path full-color display with only two neutral polarizers. Hybrid filters can be made using the CSLMs of this invention, in combination with other active or passive filters. The CSLMs of this invention can be used in many applications, particularly in the areas of recording and displaying color images. They can be arranged in a multi pixel array by pixelating the active elements, and can be implemented as color filter arrays, using patterned passive retarders rather than active polarization modulators.

In a liquid crystal display device in which a plurality of liquid crystal layers are stacked on a substrate, a method for bonding a film for sealing liquid crystal to supporting members is improved and the fabrication cost is thereby reduced, in order to provide a reflective type liquid crystal display device that achieves a bright display image and causes no parallax problem, and to provide a reducing method of the device. The liquid crystal display device comprises a substrate, a resin film, a multiplicity of columnar supporting members, an adhesive layer, and a liquid crystal layer. The substrate comprises a pixel electrode and a driving element connected to the pixel electrode, both formed on the upper surface of the substrate. The resin film comprises a common electrode provided on the upper surface of the film, and is disposed upwardly with respect to the substrate. The supporting members are provided on the substrate so as to support the resin film. The adhesive layer is provided between each of the supporting members and the resin film so as to bond the resin film to each of the supporting members. The liquid crystal layer is produced by filling liquid crystal between the substrate and the resin film. The adhesive layer is composed of a thermoplastic material, and characterized in that a bonding state of the resin film and the supporting members is realized by making the adhesive layer have a thermoplastic characteristic.

The invention relates to reflective mixed-mode twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. A direct-view display consists of a front substrate, a polarizer, liquid crystal and a rear substrate having a reflective coating. The twist angle, polarizer angle and retardation are optimized and fall within the following ranges: twist angle of between 67° and 83°; polarizer angle of between 5° and 21° or between 95° and 111°; and retardation of between 0.18 and 0.28. An alternative configuration for the display is a projection display having a front substrate, a rear substrate with a reflective coating, liquid crystal between the substrates, a polarizing beam splitter and a screen.
